Shetland Season 8: The death knell for Shetland could have been sounded with DI Jimmy Perez’s departure at the end of season seven. However, the BBC has faith in the show enough to retain it for an eighth season despite losing their lead actor of nine years.
Because of the BBC’s thoughtfulness, we didn’t have to worry about the show’s future after Douglas Henshall left because they informed us of the renewal before season seven began airing.

Alison O’Donnell
The Motherwell-born Alison O’Donnell has been on screen, in theatre, and on television. In the BBC crime drama Shetland, she plays the recurring role of Detective Sergeant Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh.
O’Donnell, who was born in the early 1980s and grew up in Motherwell with two older sisters, is a member of Generation X. At first she went to college for international law, but she changed her major after only three months so she could pursue acting instead.
Steven Robertson
Actor Steven Robertson was born in Scotland on January 1, 1977, and he plays the role of Detective Sandy Wilson in the BBC One adaptation of Ann Cleeves’ Shetland. He played Dominic Rook in the hit BBC Three comedy-drama series Being Human and Michael Connelly, a young man with cerebral palsy, in the film Inside I’m Dancing. He’s been in a tonne of shows, from Luther to The Bletchley Circle.

Shetland Season 8 Plot
Shetland has been dropping hints about Jimmy leaving for quite some time, but it wasn’t until the final episode of season seven that we learned the full details of his exit. Jimmy ultimately did the right thing by preventing an execution and extradition of a man, but this decision did not help his professional standing. “If the last thing I do is support an innocent man, I’m good with that,” Jimmy told Rhona in the season seven finale.
This concludes Jimmy’s career as a private investigator. Even though we probably won’t find out what happens to him and Meg, we can probably expect a new lead to be presented at the beginning of each episode of Shetland in the future.
