Makoto Shinkai, a Japanese anime film director, is renowned throughout the world for his outstanding work in the genre. After the love fantasy movie Weathering With You debuted in Japanese theatres in 2019, the animation studio CoMix Wave Films, STORY Inc, and Toho Co., Ltd. finally revealed the director’s upcoming project. Its working title is Suzume no Tojimari. In Q4 of 2022, this movie will be shown in Japanese theatres. Here is what we currently know.
‘Suzume No Tojimari’ is Set to Be Released in 2022
Suzume no Tojimari, the upcoming movie by Makoto Shinkai, will hit Japanese theatres on November 11, 2022. Although the release date for the movie in every country is unknown, we can certainly make some reasonable assumptions based on previous blockbusters like Your Name and Weathering With You. According to the press release, Suzume no Tojimari is only the working title. However, given that the main character’s name is, you guessed it, Suzume, perhaps it will catch on.
When might the movie be released to viewers outside of Japan? In Japan, it was published in July 2019 for Weathering With You. The movie’s rights were purchased by GKIDS, who released it in North America in January 2020. Before its August 2016 Japanese theatrical release, Your Name had its Anime Expo debut in July 2016. The movie wasn’t available to North American viewers until it was screened in theatres in April 2017. Thankfully, anime movies now travel abroad much more quickly.

The film adaptation of Suzume no Tojimari is a unique work by director and screenwriter Makoto Shinkai. In charge of character design is Takumi Tanji, while Masayoshi Tanaka acts as art director. The trailer suggests that the film is, like Shinkai’s past efforts Your Name and Weathering With You, another fantastical tale. The film is being animated by CoMix Wave Films. The music is composed by Kazuma Jinnouchi and RADWIMPS.
What we know about Makoto Shinkai’s latest film
Not much is known about this movie beyond what was seen in the trailer. The director of the movie, Makoto Shinkai, reportedly gave a brief speech to help set the mood.
As Makoto Shinkai, the film’s director, put it, “We must think about how to close the numerous doors we left open. I have entrusted Suzume with this duty as she travels across Japan to shut down numerous establishments. It is my earnest wish that everyone will be thrilled and smiling after seeing this film.
This, Shinkai clarified, is a “tale about closure.”
The news release provides additional information on the story. Kyushu is a town where Suzume, age 17, meets a young guy looking for a door (which ties back to the themes Shinkai mentioned). The protagonist stumbles upon an old, rusty door that, when opened, leads to a network of portals all around Japan. Wherever they open, these portals seem to bring destruction, and it’s up to Suzume to save the day by figuring out how to seal them.
The main image shows Suzume’s “mesmerising” first door surrounded by squalor and water. That may provide us with a clue about the setting of the story. What are the odds that this movie takes place in the same continuity as Shinkai’s previous two? That is something that we don’t know now and must await more developments.
