Femboy is a phrase that has been used for quite some time. The earliest records date back to the 1990s.
In the same vein as the epithet “Sissy,” it was used to mock boys and men who exhibited stereotypically feminine behaviour.
Recent usage of the term has increased especially in anime, where it is used to denote such things as:
1. Seiko Kotobuki (Lovely Complex)
In this Shoujo/rom-com, Seiko Kotobuki plays a supporting role. Seiko, unlike many anime femboy characters, is a true transgender in addition to the typical features.
Positive, upbeat, pleasant, cheery, jovial, and seemingly unfazeable in his good mood most of the time.
You can see that Seiko’s jealousy may be poisonous and that she has trouble respecting the personal space of others.
2. Tetra (Log Horizon)
If you watch the dubbed version of this anime, you’ll hear Tetra say, “It’s Tetra, baby,” quite a bit. He is obviously a femboy and matches the profile perfectly.
Some characters in this Isekai, who are trapped inside a game and must make a living there, remain unaware of Tetra’s true identity. And at least one dude is under the impression that Tetra is a she.
Contrary to other anime, this one doesn’t have a TRAP reveal.
3. Titus Alexius (Magi: Kingdom Of Magic)
As the second season of Magi progresses, we meet the impassioned Titus, who appears during the period when some of the mages go to school to learn their craft.
Despite his initial hostility and reluctance, he ends up being Aladdin’s friend.
Titus undergoes significant character development over the course of the show, and nowhere is this more evident than when he comes into contact with a girl who is going through a difficult period.
Unexpectedly, he makes for a fascinating protagonist.
4. Chihiro Fujisaki (Danganronpa)
Danganronpa can be defined in many ways. It’s a school-themed anime in which the main cast is confined within a building. This arena serves as a jail where they must fight for survival.
Chihiro is just one of the many interesting people, but she’s also a trap (or femboy, depending on your preference).
If you don’t know better or haven’t been told Chihiro is a transgender person, you might mistake him for a male based on his appearance alone.
5. Envy (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Like much other legendary anime series, this one was embracing the “femboy” aesthetic long before the phrase was commonplace in the industry. Envy may or may not be a villain, but she certainly fits the bill.
Envy possesses superhuman strength and power, but the extent of his supernatural abilities is unclear.
For understandable reasons, though, Envy is often misunderstood to refer to a female (despite the lack of cliches in the anime).
6. Hayate Ayasaki (Hayate The Combat Butler)
One of the central figures Hayate eventually becomes Nagi’s employee; she is extremely wealthy thanks to her family’s fortune. And especially her mother, who passed away and whom she sorely misses.
Hayate is a unique male protagonist since he is strong physically, honest in his dealings, loyal to his friends, and has a striking appearance.
7. Jakotsu (Inuyasha)
One of the main antagonists of the Inuyasha series appears later on (season 1). Jakotsu is one of the seven members of The Band of Seven, a deadly assassination crew that met their end after amassing too much power.
Since Jakotsu has no problem expressing his attraction to other characters, especially men, we can safely assume that he identifies as Gay. This isn’t how he acts when he’s around women.
He is always nice to Inuyasha, yet he can be a little rude when he’s not in a good mood.
8. Kamatari (Rurouni Kenshin)
Anime throughout the 1990s included its share of femboy or TRAP characters. Rurouni Kenshin has a number of renowned samurai, and Kamatari is one of them.
It’s not a cliché or a fluke that Kamatari dresses in both male and female attire; he does it on purpose.
He has a crush on a main antagonist from the Rurouni Kenshin series.
9. Rimuru Tempest (Tensei Slime)
Several different labels can be applied to such a figure. In addition to being androgynous, Rimuru’s gender is open to interpretation. This word refers to a person who possesses qualities of both sexes.
When compared to other characters on this list, Rimuru stands out because he is also a femboy.
Rimuru is an ever-increasingly powerful individual, seemingly without bounds, thanks to his position as an army leader, his connections, and his slimy powers.
10. Kazuto Kirigaya (Sword Art Online S2)
As seen in the second season of the SAO anime, Kirito (Kazuto Kirigaya) modifies his appearance in the Gungale Online video game. He ends up being mistaken for a female because of this.
When Kirito meets Sinon Asada in GGO, it’s humorously demonstrated (Gungale Online). When she finds out that Kirito isn’t a boy while they’re in the midst of changing clothes, she completely loses it.
These “femboy” phases that Kirito experiences during S2 are just that—transient.
