Who Is Yorichi Tsugikuni? What Are Appearance And Personality

Yoriichi Tsugikuni ( Tsugikuni Yoriichi? ) is a pivotal supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Known as the strongest Demon Slayer in history, he is said to have lived over 500 years ago, during the Sengoku Era (also known as the Golden Age of Demon Slayers). He also developed the first Breathing Style, which later evolved into the Hinokami Kagura practised by Tanjiro Kamado and the rest of the Kamado family.

Michikatsu Tsugikuni, the older twin brother, turned devil and became one of the Twelve Kizuki; Yoriichi is the younger twin brother.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni Appearance

Yoriichi, like his identical twin brother, is a tall, muscular man with long, spiky hair that he wears in a ponytail and colours with red highlights. In contrast to his sibling, he was a little leaner and had shorter bangs and waver hair. His Demon Slayer Mark, though lighter in colour, was located at the same spot on his forehead as Tanjiro’s. Yoriichi has a serious expression on his face almost all the time.

Yoriichi, like most Demon Slayers, wore a red haori over a very pale orange nagagi kimono, a black umanori-style hakama, zri with red straps, and white tabi socks. He also carried a Nichirin Sword at the left side of his waist. When people assumed he was deaf, he wore a pair of hanafuda earrings his mother had made as a lucky charm, which he subsequently gave to his buddy Sumiyoshi. Sumiyoshi’s descendants then handed the earrings to Tanjiro.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni Personality

Yoriichi was a peaceful and polite person who never showed any signs of excitement or emotion in his expression. When killing demons, Yoriichi hardly changed his countenance, and Muzan was taken aback by his incredible skill because he didn’t seem to possess it. His wife, Uta, was the only person who could reliably interpret his emotions despite his affable demeanour and constant expressiveness.

In addition to his godlike abilities, he possessed an endearing humility, exemplified by the fact that he nearly felt embarrassed after performing the Sun Breathing’s forms for Suyako at her request and his refusal to consider himself anything more than a regular man. His brother also recalled that Yoriichi had an unwavering belief in the future, certain that another generation would one day surpass the power of the Demon Slayers who had developed Breathing Styles.

Despite being mainly casual, he does experience tremendous emotions; he grieved the death of Uta and their unborn child for ten straight days and was reduced to tears by the delight Sumire expressed at the simple act of being hoisted up. He also smiled genuinely and showed gratitude to Sumiyoshi when his companion told him his life was not meaningless and promised to preserve his Sun Breathing forms via his generations. Another example of Yoriichi’s generosity is when he was on his way to meet a midwife before the birth of his child, but he stopped to assist an elderly man in reaching his dying son.

It was revealed that Yoriichi looked up to and admired his older brother Michikatsu growing up, even going so far as to say that if Michikatsu achieved his goal of becoming the greatest samurai in Japan, then Yoriichi would strive to become the second greatest. Even in his childhood, he was also extremely reserved and quiet, even being thought deaf by his family for seven years as he never spoke.

Yoriichi’s devotion to his family is demonstrated by the fact that he took care of his sick mother when no one else did and hid his father’s history of child abuse from others[5]. The fact that he preserved the flute his older brother Michikatsu gave him before he ran away from home until the day he passed away is evidence of how much he loved him. When he met him after sixty years, the latter had embraced his new life as a demon. Yoriichi was heartbroken and saddened by the sight of his brother and shed tears at the thought of what he had become. Nonetheless, he tried to eliminate Michikatsu personally since he saw him as a traitor to the Demon Slayer Corps.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni Abilities

Overall Abilities:

As the only person ever born with the Demon Slayer Mark, Transparent World, and Selfless State, and blessed with a godlike physique and innate swordsmanship talent, Yoriichi is the strongest known Demon Slayer in history. For his ability to easily overcome an experienced sword instructor at the age of seven, he has been called a miraculous prodigy beyond compare. After training as a Demon Slayer, Yoriichi could kill several demons to where his older brother remarked that he as a youngster couldn’t even compare to him as an adult.

He was the only member of the Demon Slayer Corps to successfully corner Muzan Kibutsuji, instantly overpower him, and have him on the edge of death before Muzan managed to flee. Muzan survived the encounter with Yoriichi but was profoundly changed by it. He now refers to Yoriichi as a monster and is so terrified by the sight of his earrings that he physically shakes.

Approximately eight years before his death, at the ripe old age of 85, he fought his demonised twin brother Kokushibo. Despite both his elderly age and apparent blindness, he rapidly gained the upper hand in the struggle with a single motion, slicing his throat before he ultimately died standing up, undamaged. Kokushibo himself confesses that if Yoriichi launched a second swing before dying, he would have killed him while adding Yoriichi’s power was still at his peak.

Demon Slayer Mark: Because he was born with the Demon Slayer Mark, Yoriichi has always had access to the incredible physical gifts it bestows. Yoriichi defied the odds and lived to be 85, well above the lifespan of any other marks user of his day. It is currently unknown why Yoriichi is immune to the effects of the Mark; however, it is likely due to the fact that he is the first person to ever possess the Mark and that he was born with it naturally, whereas all other mark bearers must through extensive training in order to acquire it.

Bright Red Nichirin Sword: Yoriichi was born with the mark that apparently gave people the ability to turn their blade brilliant red as while, making him the first person in history to be able to make his Nichirin Sword a bright red colour. To counter the demons’ improved regeneration, including Muzan’s quick regeneration, Yoriichi may dye his black sword to blazing red at will.

This will burn him at a cellular level, leaving scars on his body for hundreds of years to come. Although Muzan was in a weakened state due to the Anti-Kibutsuji Drug, he still noted that Yoriichi’s bright red blade was far more effective than those of the current generation Hashira and Tanjiro. Yoriichi was able to completely negate Muzan’s near-absolute regeneration for a short period of time, whereas the modern-era Demon Slayers can only slightly slow it down.

Transparent World: Yoriichi was born with the ability to see the Transparent World, and he used it to startling effect when he learned to read a target’s breathing and muscle tension to determine the optimal moment to attack. This skill also helped him out against Muzan by letting him quickly identify and exploit his opponent’s vulnerabilities.

Extrasensory Perception: Yoriichi had highly developed sensory abilities that can detect objects outside the normal range of perception, in addition to the sixth sense bestowed by the Transparent World that allowed him to view the inner workings of a person. Yoriichi, like other skilled Demon Slayers, would be able to detect at a glance whether an opponent is human or demonic based on their aura. Upon meeting Muzan for the first time, Yoriichi knew without a doubt that he had been sent to Earth for the sole purpose of vanquishing him. Yoriichi also had a good grasp of the Demon King’s aura, which he likens to the molten rock emitted by a volcano.

Genius Intellect:

Yoriichi is so gifted intellectually that he was recognised as a child prodigy. His first words were crystal clear and pronounced, despite the fact that he had been mute for most of his life. Also, he showed maturity beyond his years by recognising his mother’s illness and staying by her side till she passed away. Another indication of his superior intelligence is that he was able to use the Transparent World for combat right away, despite having no prior experience with it. He knew, for example, that an attacker’s lungs would expand before they struck, and that he should also keep an eye on the target’s bone movement, muscle contraction, and blood flow.

With only the basics of swordsmanship under his belt, he was able to knock out and severely injure a professional swordsman in a single, devastating blow. Because of his brilliant mind, the “Golden Age of the Demon Slayers” came to be, as he was the one who first developed the Breathing Styles and adapted the original Breathing Technique to fit the strengths of different individuals. In that same flash of insight, he devised an altogether new way to defeat Muzan by exploiting the latter’s 12 organs, which had previously been his only known point of vulnerability.
