The Handmaids Tale Season 6 Release Date: When Will It Air?

The Handmaids Tale Season 6: Earlier this year, it was revealed that June and company would be back for a sixth and final season, which would ideally finish off her story in a pleasing way for long-time fans.

It has been a genuine honour to convey the narrative of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and the chillingly relevant universe, and we are happy to present audiences a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale,” said creator, showrunner, and executive producer Bruce Miller in a statement at the time.

To quote the cast: “We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we would never have gotten to this point.”

The epidemic threw off the timing of the publication of new seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, leaving a two-year hiatus between seasons three and four. Now that filming has resumed, Season 6 could premiere late in 2023, exactly one year after Season 5.

However, a delay till early 2024 is possible due to the pressure to make this final season great and the intentions for a sequel to The Testaments.

The Handmaids Tale Season 6 Cast: Who’s In It?

You can count on seeing all of the following cast members return for season six, as they are crucial to what makes The Handmaid’s Tale what it is:

• Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne
• Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford
• Madeline Brewer as Janine
• Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia
• O-T Fagbenle as Luke
• Max Minghella as Nick
Samira Wiley as Moira
• Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence
• Amanda Brugel as Rita

Alexis Bledel, a fan favourite, will not be participating in the series’ final episode. After having her role diminished in Season 4, Emily was totally written out in the Season 5 opener when it was revealed that she had returned to Gilead.

According to a statement Alexis released to Entertainment Weekly at the time, she said: “After giving it some serious thought, I decided it was best for me to take a break from The Handmaid’s Tale for the time being. Forever indebted to Bruce Miller for penning such authentic and moving passages for Emily, as well as Hulu, MGM, and the whole cast and crew for their unwavering encouragement and enthusiasm.”

Not much was said about why Bledel left, but at this point it seems reasonable to presume she won’t be back until the series finale.

I’m hoping that both Rita and Moira’s responsibilities will increase in the future. They had significant roles in the show’s first three seasons, although that diminished significantly in the fifth. The explanation, it turns out, has a lot to do with Bledel’s departure.

The Handmaids Tale Season 6 Plot: What Will Happen?

With the conclusion of season five, Digital Spy spoke with showrunner Bruce Miller about his plans for a potential ending. Bruce, however, notes that these plans are still in the early stages of development and are subject to change.

“We’re going to wrap it up on our own terms,” said Miller. That’s just not possible given how our company is structured. And most significantly, it’s not the kind of item everyone would hand out to the crowd.

“It’s incredibly aggravating that the book abruptly ends. Furthermore, everyone is asking, “How could you, Bruce Miller…?” As in, “Who do you think you are, writing more?” When I think of finishing the book, I think, “Oh my God, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.” Given that, one would reasonably ask, “What the hell happened?! “Oh my God, that was the most frustrating conclusion ever.

Miller, referring to the book’s conclusion in the month of June, said, “We have so many women throughout history who didn’t have names, who were never identified. They were there for a while. They told their story, and this is The Handmaid’s Tale – she told it. And then they disappear, faceless, into the mist of history. And that’s the problem: there are too many women out there who are just Offred and are just the Handmaid.

“But that’s the tale we’re telling. This story properly begins when that child is taken away from her. And that’s when she turns into a Handmaid. And it ends when she disappears off of our radar. Of course, she doesn’t just vanish from existence. It’s not some artificially created female character. Because we haven’t been able to detect her doesn’t mean she doesn’t exist.

Miller said at the end of season 5 that June and Nick were unable to “think about anything” other than their love for each other, suggesting that there is still some unresolved business between them that will be explored in season 6.
