The Handmaid’s Tale season 5: Release Date Status, Cast, Plot, & More!

This is excellent news for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale: Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale has been officially ordered and will premiere in 2017! Even before the start of the fourth season, the cast announced that the show would be returning for a fifth season in December 2020.

“We are pleased to be able to continue to tell these stories with our wonderful cast and crew, and can’t wait to be back on the air with season four next year,” showrunner Bruce Miller told The Hollywood Reporter.

Is this, however, the final season? To be honest, Miller said in another interview with THR that he “doesn’t know” whether or not season five will be its finale.

When it comes to where we’re headed in the show right now, we talked about it a lot. We’ve also talked a lot about it with [Elisabeth Moss] and the writing crew, but I do think it’s a good moment to take another look after this year.”

I’m not aiming to put a stop to it,” he said in an interview with Deadline for the Contenders TV virtual event. “Oh, you know, let’s simply walk away?” is not an option for me because the team produced an excellent television show.

According to Hulu’s head of scripted originals, Jordan Helman, “creative fashion that seems organic” is critical when it comes to ending the show. He went on to say, “We haven’t decided on a solution.” In the next months, “I imagine we’ll be able to answer that question.”

And it appears that a spin-off series based on Margaret Atwood’s most recent work could be the answer.

When The Testaments was born on Hulu, it was linked to the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, according to Helman. In the meantime, “We’re working on it.”

It has since been announced that a sixth season is in the works, so perhaps there is more horrific, desolate future life to be found in the story.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Release Date:

The Lord be praised! Season five’s premiere date has been officially announced.

Hulu will debut the new season on September 14th, 2022, with a two-part premiere episode. There hasn’t been a UK release date set yet, but it will air on Channel 4 shortly after the US release, as has been done in the past.

“June struggles to reestablish her identity and purpose as she faces penalties for killing Commander Waterford,” reads a teaser from Hulu.

“As Gilead’s influence spreads to Canada, the widowed Serena tries to increase her reputation in the city of Toronto. As he seeks to rebuild Gilead and climb to power, Commander Lawrence collaborates with Aunt Lydia. To continue their effort to save and reunite with Hannah, June, Luke, and Moira fight Gilead from afar.”

The episode was filmed in Ontario, Canada, as usual.

Filming was taking place in the Brantford region from mid-February to mid-March for a show called Ruby Road, according to a notice posted in the area. The Handmaid’s Tale is rumored to have been referred to as Ruby Road because of the color of the Handmaid’s cloaks.

In addition to the various Ontario locations previously used by the show, a supplementary notice announced that filming would take place on many streets and at a private property in Brantford. They pledged to keep the noise level down for the neighbors (at least during the evenings).

The actress who plays Aunt Lydia, Ann Dowd, recently told The Independent that filming would begin in February 2022.

A further behind-the-scenes look was posted by actress Amanda Brugel on February 9; the video was labeled “season 5” and featured the chair her character Rita sits on.

Handmaids star Christine Ko has been added to the cast.

Christine Ko, well known for her role as Dave’s Lily, will return to the show in a recurring role. Lily’s description as “a gritty, resourceful Gilead immigrant who is now a leader in the resistance organization” is sure to add drama to the show.

Joseph Fiennes, who played Fred Waterford, will not be returning to the show any time soon. Finally getting her revenge on the Commander in season four, June enlisted the help of the other survivors to beat him to death in the borderlands between Gilead and Canada. Fred may reappear as images or flashbacks in June’s thoughts from time to time, but given the anguish he caused her, we doubt it.

Showrunner Bruce Miller explained to Entertainment Weekly that we will be able to watch the entire season “I’m confident that Fred will return. Seeing Joe [Fiennes] again would be life-threatening for me “, it is.

Innumerable directions could be pushed by it. Serena could become a highly likable character as a result. It has the potential to send her into out-of-control anger or perhaps a state of euphoria. It has the potential to either make June famous or land her in prison. On the other hand, who will know that she is a refugee who committed this act of defiance? Who was there, and who is going to relay the story to them? The great thing about it is that it can either become a massive image and source of inspiration or tarnish the reputation of the Handmaids.

To anyone who looks at it, they will see a completely different thing, which is what I was attempting to achieve with the placement of the image at the end of the episode. At the point where you realize, ‘Omigosh, she did it.’ It’s a mix of both joy and sorrow; Fred doesn’t have a head, and yet she’s standing there with the baby in her arms. What a magnificent and horrible thing that is to contemplate towards the end. As time goes on, June will continue to see Fred whenever she shuts her eyes.

Fiennes is interested in continuing the storyline in any way he can (via Fortress of Solitude). According to him, “I would love an episode where we dig back into the early days to analyze Fred’s headiness and support,” he said. A look at how things went awry would reveal the corrosive consequences of power on a lesser person such as Fred, whose personality is hidden behind a double-breasted jacket and a political position.

No one notable will be playing Serena’s kid in season five of Grey’s Anatomy!

Because MGM Television and Hulu have already bought the rights to another TV adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, there has been no news on whether the show will be allowed to explore this subject.

But June’s drive for vengeance may have cost her the family she always wanted to see again. She kills Fred at the end of season four and then returns home to Nicole, covered in blood, in the final scene. June asks Luke if she can spend a few minutes with her child before she leaves, knowing that she has crossed a line.

June and the other survivors are expected to continue their resistance to Gilead from Canada in the future. If the closing sequences are any indication, we may expect all-out conflict and a slew of deception.
