Eric Garcetti’s nomination as the next American ambassador to India was advanced by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, sending it to the full Senate for ratification.
Democrats supported the former mayor of Los Angeles by a vote of 13 to 8, defeating two Republicans, Sens. Todd Young of Indiana and Bill Hagerty of Tennessee.
The outcome of the vote is encouraging for Garcetti, whose candidacy has been delayed since it was announced in July 2021, in part because of concerns over how he handled allegations of sexual harassment made against an aide while he was mayor. Any impropriety has been refuted by Garcetti.

It is not clear when the full Senate will vote on his nomination; Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Tuesday he hoped to bring it up “soon.” Garcetti needs a simple majority to win confirmation.
Garcetti’s candidacy was confirmed by the Foreign Relations Committee in January 2022, but the full Senate never voted on him because of resistance from a number of senators, including some Democrats.
Even though President Joe Biden and his administration, along with many members of Congress, view India as a crucial strategic partner in the common objective of restraining China’s ascent, the United States does not currently have a permanent ambassador to the country.
