Sam Worthington on Avatar 2: After 13 years after Sam Worthington played Jake Sully in James Cameron’s “Avatar,” the first image from the film’s follow-up was released this week.
While promoting his new FX real crime series “Under the Banner of Heaven,” Worthington, now 45, said to Variety that he was 30 when he shot the first one. “And I’ll be close to 50 when the second one is released. You see, I was using a wheelchair in the first one. Furthermore, by the time we reach the fourth and fifth, I might already be using a wheelchair.
The sequel to the franchise, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” will open nationwide on December 22, as it was revealed during Disney’s CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday in Las Vegas.

Sam Worthington Says Avatar 2 Will Be “marvelous”
Worthington continued, “It’s nice to be a member of such an amazing family and have that longevity. I’m a very little cog in this, but Jim is a really loyal man and he keeps the same people on board. It has a large creative team, and from what I’ve seen, what they’re coming up with is astounding and marvellous.
The second episode of Cameron’s huge series will feature an underwater vision for the Na’vi world. “Avatar: The Way of Water” revisits the Sully family and the trouble that follows them, taking place more than ten years after the events of the first movie.

In the Avatar films, Sam Worthington plays Jake Sully, a human who, by the end of the first film, has fully integrated his consciousness into his Na’vi avatar and become one of the People. Right now, Worthington is promoting his FX true crime series Under the Banner of Heaven, but since Disney has lifted the lid on Avatar: The Way of Water, he’s also discussing that.
In an interview with Variety, Worthington recalled, “I was 30 years old when I did the first [Avatar]. And by the time the sequel is published, I’ll be nearing 50. I used to be wheelchair-bound in the original. When we get to the fourth and fifth, I may need a wheelchair just to get around.
Not even the passage of time seems to have dampened Worthington’s enthusiasm for the series. “It’s wonderful to have such a long life and to be a part of such a wonderful family,” he said. I’m just a small cog in the wheel, but Jim is a very loyal man and he keeps the same people on board. There’s a large group of creative minds working on it, and from what I’ve seen, their work is nothing short of astounding and fantastic.
