Baldur’s Gate 3 Release Date, Story, Game Play Update In 2022

Baldur’s Gate 3: Finally, the video game that can capture everything you and I love about Dungeons & Dragons is here, my fellow dungeoneers, creatures, and roleplayers. This year marked the debut of Early Access for Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios.

To those who enjoy role-playing games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 and would like to try their hand at Dungeons & Dragons but don’t know anyone who plays the game or has access to a Dungeon Master, Baldur’s Gate 3 is an excellent entry point.

Every facet of the game, including combat, environment creation, and character development, is lifted directly from the original pen and paper version. So much of Baldur’s Gate 3’s gameplay, plot, and Dungeons & Dragons vibe have already been shown off by Larian Studios.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Release Date

The Early Access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available for download on Mac and PC.

Know that Baldur’s Gate 3 is released in Early Access, which means it is not yet complete. To what extent Divinity: Original Sin 2 is indicative of how long it will take before Baldur’s Gate 3 is considered complete is unknown. On September 15, 2016, Divinity: Original Sin 2 entered Early Access, and on September 14, 2017, the game entered its final release.

The release of Baldur’s Gate 3 is scheduled for 2023.

Baldur’s Gate 3: The Dungeons & Dragons connection

When comparing Divinity and Baldur’s Gate, the biggest distinction is that the latter is based on Dungeons & Dragons. A definition, please. Everything from the races to the classes to the scenario is lifted wholesale from Dungeons & Dragons, most specifically the 5th Edition.

You’ll find yourself in the middle of the Blood War, a conflict that first appeared in the Dungeons & Dragons Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus adventure module. Demons, who reside in the chaotic evil plane of the Abyss, and devils, who reside in the similarly wicked but lawful realm of the Nine Hells, are the two sides in this conflict. One simple way to tell them apart is by their respective goals: demons seek to destroy the world, while devils seek power over it.

The story being told by Larian Studios, however, is entirely original and so cannot be spoiled. However, you can learn more about the world of Dungeons & Dragons by researching The Forgotten Realms. Baldur’s Gate, an important trade city on the western coast of Faerûn, and Avernus, the first layer of hell, are two of the most important places you’ll visit in the game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Races And Classes

If your favorite Dungeons & Dragons race or class isn’t present at launch, don’t worry; Larian Studios plans on constantly adding more content to Baldur’s Gate 3 throughout Early Access.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Gameplay

Like Divinity: Original Sin 2, Baldur’s Gate 3 is an isometric third-person role-playing game. In-depth conversations with multiple paths forward will be present, as they would be in any role-playing game, but the turn-based combat system will be the game’s main focus.

One of the four heroes you control will be one you create, while the other three will be random NPCs you meet on your adventure. When playing online, you and up to three other players, each controlling a different character, will form a queue.

Dice rolls will affect the outcomes of actions and the viability of potentially dangerous conversational decisions, much like in Dungeons & Dragons. If you’re new with how Dungeons & Dragons works, know that your character’s performance isn’t totally dependent on luck because they can become an expert in particular skill sets by their specializations.

From a strategic top-down perspective, you can use spells, toss daggers, or go chop with a gigantic greatsword. Combat is very much strategy-based, but the game’s open world and customization options are enhanced by the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired Divinity 4.0 engine developed by Larion Studios.

If what Vincke says is to be believed, “We’ll keep true to our beginnings by providing players with a wide variety of systems and the freedom to make choices about how they’re used in order to further their own and their party’s adventures. That is fundamental to our work and will not alter. We attempted adapting the main rules of D&D to a video game, and it didn’t work, therefore an interpretation of the game will be needed.”

If you want to do something cunning and cautious outside of combat, like setting up ambushes or sneaking around in the dark, you can switch to a turn-based mode.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Story

Insidious creatures called mind flayers, which resemble evil squids, have broken free from the Underdark and are now attempting to take control of the Astral Plane. These intelligent beings can only reproduce by inserting parasites into the nervous systems of unsuspecting hosts, and guess what? You and your companions are all infected with the same mental parasite.

The mind flayers have rediscovered the nautiloids’ secret, Vincke told PC Gamer. “Those are some serious issues. If you’re familiar with Dungeons & Dragons, especially Volo’s Guide, you’ll know that the githyanki are an alien race that once ruled the Astral Plane but was driven into the Underdark when they lost their power. With a nautiloid in tow, the mind flayers invade a metropolis to reestablish their dominion. However, the reality is quite different.”

The githyanki, riding a swarm of red dragons, seek to repel the invading mind flayers in the opening scene. Making your githyanki is an option. A githyanki is one of the earliest pre-made character options available to you. The five original characters are as follows:

  • Asterion – Elf/Vampire Rogue
  • Gale – Human Wizard
  • Lae’zel – Githyanki Warrior (I assume they mean Fighter?)
  • Shadowheart – Half-Elf Cleric
  • Will – Human Warlock

The most recent excerpt showed our heroes descending into Avernus, the first level of hell and the site of the aforementioned Blood War. A defensive githyanki force is closing in on the mind-controlling squid people, and you and the mind flayers are in the way.
