What Kind of Anime is Moriarty the Patriot?

Inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Rysuke Takeuchi and Hikaru Miyoshi created the Japanese mystery comic series Moriarty the Patriot. The book centres on William James Moriarty’s (Holmes’s archenemy) formative years. From October 2020 to June 2021, Production I.G. aired an anime television series based on the manga.

Plot

By the end of the nineteenth century, the British Empire was a major player on the international stage. The filthy nobility who reign over the populace from on high ensure that the typical citizen has almost little chance of ever making it to the top of the social ladder.

Two orphans, William and Louis James are adopted by Albert Moriarty and his family. William calls himself a “crime consultant” and both brothers have a mutual loathing for the corrupt British aristocratic. Together, they hatch a plan to eliminate Albert’s nasty half-brother William, to torch the family estate, and to start a new life together with the goal of utilising unlawful means to overthrow the class system that has plagued the country for ages.

When William James Moriarty is carrying out his complex plan to kill a lord who is hunting commoners, he runs into Sherlock, who can figure out that a third party was involved in the murder. Because of this, Moriarty becomes intrigued by Sherlock and decides to test his skills by having him falsely accused of murdering a count.

Characters

William James Moriarty

Brother number three of the Moriarty gang and a professional adviser in the criminal justice system. He’s very bright, and he utilizes that brilliance to plot the ideal crimes to improve society and put a stop to social stratification. He aids the victims of crimes motivated by social status by arranging for them to commit the murders themselves without leaving a trace. After the actual William was killed in one of Albert’s heists, Albert adopted William from an orphanage and reared him as his own.

Albert James Moriarty

The eldest of the Moriarty brothers. He is the only genuine Moriarty brother because he took in William and Louis when he saw how dysfunctional their biological family was and came to share William’s hope for a better world.

Louis James Moriarty

Moriarty’s younger sibling. Like William, he was reared by a group of strangers at an orphanage. His father was tricked into obtaining him life-saving surgery as a child, and the condition was cured. As a loyal William servant, he does as he is told without question.

John H. Watson

Fred Porlock

A close friend of William’s who is an expert in disguise and the deadly use of blades and weaponry. As William’s spy and information collector, he rarely talks outside of conveying the latter’s findings. Although he keeps to himself most of the time, deep down he is a softie at heart, especially when it comes to children.

Sebastian Moran

William has a friend in Sebastian. Former enlistee turned out to be a career criminal and was advised to quit the military. He serves as William’s soldier, bodyguard, and assassin, and is a specialist with firearms who can hit targets from great distances, especially with rifles. A supporter of William’s vision for a better world, he has stated that he is willing to die for it.
