At the SAG Awards 2022, CODA and Ted Lasso took up the top ensemble prizes for feature films and TV comedy, respectively, making it a fantastic night for the up-and-coming streaming service Apple TV+. The television drama categories provided an exciting dose of suspense, with Succession taking home the drama ensemble award but Hoyeon Jung and Lee Jung-jae taking home acting honours for Squid Game. Meanwhile, longtime awards season favourites like Will Smith (for King Richard) and Ariana Debose (for West Side Story) were finally able to give the televised acceptance speeches most viewers have been anticipating.
According to a story by Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford and David Canfield, tensions were high in the room. After 10 years of hard work, the biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye finally premiered, and Jessica Chastain was awarded the best actress award. The actors of the Korean serial celebrated their breakthrough wins in the TV drama categories all night at the Squid Game table, with Will Smith breaking down in tears while thanking his young King Richard co-stars Saniiya Sidney and Demi Singleton.
The success of Netflix’s breakout drama The Squid Game, which aspires to become the first foreign language winner of the top drama prize at the Emmys, may provide an intriguing preview of the soon-to-arrive Emmy season. Chastain’s triumph shakes up the Oscar race, which was already wide open, while Troy Kotsur’s solo prize for CODA (in addition to the cast’s ensemble win) establishes him as the strongest supporting actor threat to The Power of the Dog’s Kodi Smit-McPhee, the runaway critical favourite in the category. CODA is also nominated for an Academy Award for best picture, and if it were to win the award for its ensemble cast, it would be a serious contender against expensive frontrunners like The Power of the Dog and Dune.
