Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan: Why Does Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe Have 4 Episodes?

Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan is a Hirohiko Araki manga one-shot series. In Japan, the series is titled Kishibe Rohan wa Ugokanai Rohan Kishibe Does Not Move. Inspired by Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure volume 4, this new series follows manga artist Rohan Kishibe as he travels the world in search of material for his work. The one-shot alludes to Friedrich Nietzsche’s work of the same name, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, in its title.

Beginning with the 1997 one-shot “Episode 16: At a Confessional,” the series has been serialised in Shueisha’s Weekly Shnen Jump, with further instalments appearing in Jump Square, Shnen Jump+, Bessatsu Margaret, JoJo Magazine, and Ultra Jump. Araki felt it too tempting to utilise Rohan, so he altered the series to be wholly original. Initially published in a collected volume in 2013, a second volume was released in 2018.

The first volume was highly welcomed by both fans and critics, and it ended up becoming the 68th best-selling manga volume in Japan in 2014. In 2017 and 2018, the Ultra Jump magazine’s Appendix Booklet offered spinoff short stories by a variety of authors.

Two more stories were added to the collection when it was released in 2018 as Kishibe Rohan Does Not Shout and Kishibe Rohan Does Not Frolic. In the years between 2017 and 2020, David Production released OVA adaptations based on various media. NHK General TV aired the first episode of a live-action remake in the year 2020.

The story takes place between Diamond Is Unbreakable and Golden Wind, and it follows the manga artist Rohan Kishibe as he travels the world to gain inspiration for his works and make them more realistic. In order to understand everything about a person and change their memories and habits, he uses his Stand ability, a manifestation of his inner strength termed “Heaven’s Door.”

Production and publication

Hirohiko Araki develops Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan in instalments. On July 7, 1997, Shueisha published “Episode 16: At a Confessional” in Weekly Shnen Jump. He was supposed to write an entirely new novel with no ties to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, but the opportunity to employ his Diamond Is Unbreakable character Rohan Kishibe proved too enticing to pass up.

As the story progressed, it appeared in a variety of Shueisha periodicals, including Weekly Shnen Jump, Jump Square, Shnen Jump, Bessatsu Margaret, JoJo Magazine, and Ultra Jump. The web magazine Shnen Jump+ included an episode called “Mochizuki Family Moon Viewing” in its launch lineup, and readers were given the opportunity to read it for free.

In 1999, “At a Confessional” and three other short stories by Araki were published in a Japanese anthology titled Under Execution Under Jailbreak. Later, on November 19, 2013, in Japan, the first four episodes were compiled into a volume of Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan together with a one-shot titled “Rohan Kishibe Goes to Gucci.” On July 19, 2018, a second Japanese volume covering episodes 2-4 was released.

It was announced in February 2022 that Viz Media has licenced the series for English publication under the title Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe, with the first volume due out on September 27, 2022. Star Comics published the first volume in Italy on January 8, 2015 under the title Cos parl Rohan Kishibe, while Tonkam released Rohan Kishibe in France in April 2016.

Final Words

David Production, an animation studio, adapted “Episode 5” (titled “Millionaire Village”) into an original video animation (OVA), with Toshiyuki Kato as director, Yasufumi Soejima as director’s assistant, Shun’ichi Ishimoto as character designer, and Kenta Mimuro as Stand designer. Yuugo Kanno performs the opening theme, “Kishibe Rohan wa Ugokanai no Tema,” while Coda performs the closing theme, “Finding the Truth.”
