Another blue cartoon figure has usurped the scheduled release date of The Smurfs’ forthcoming untitled musical film, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer for their return. Paramount Studios revealed Monday that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will spin into theatres on December 20, 2024, to go head to head with the blue-skinned protagonists of Avatar 3, and this means that the Smurfs will have to now wait until February 2025 for their turn to shine again.
Major films like Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, the Harry Potter films, and even last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home have all aimed for the coveted pre-Christmas release date. James Cameron’s enormous science fiction fantasy franchise, Avatar, returns to theatres in December for the first time in over a decade, and further sequels are planned for the years to come. Paramount may be more confident in the long-running Sonic franchise’s ability to compete with the might of Cameron’s story than it is in the return of the Smurfs, given that Avatar 3 is set to debut in December 2024.
The Smurfs have been around for decades, but it wasn’t until Sony Pictures licensed them that we finally got to see the little blue characters in a live-action/animation hybrid film series, starting with 2011’s The Smurfs and concluding with 2017’s Smurfs: The Lost Village. Paramount, the new owner of the franchise’s rights, revealed intentions to revive it with new films and a continuation of the CG-animated Nickelodeon series last year.

It was revealed in June that South Park writer Pam Brady would be penning the script for the next Smurfs film and that Puss in Boots director Chris Miller would be in charge of directing the project. However, the picture will be the first in a series of new Smurf projects from Paramount, and while the plot details are presently unknown, we may expect them soon.
In 2021, Nickelodeon premiered a new CG-animated series simply titled The Smurfs, and while the 2021 film didn’t do so well critically, the series was a big enough hit to keep the plans for a Smurf universe alive, with plans including a second 26-episode season of the show and a variety of video games and other tie-in products.
In spite of the fact that The Smurfs have been a part of popular culture for decades, their upcoming film and television appearances will be the most numerous they have ever been. Toy lines and other merchandising have kept The Smurfs fresh and relevant while they waited for their time in the sun again, ensuring that their popularity has never really faded. The release date for the Smurfs musical film, which currently lacks a title, is February 14, 2025.
