A new revival project for Babylon 5 has been announced, this time in the form of an animated film. Today, the creator of the original series, J. Michael Straczynski, announced the news via Twitter, stating that “this brand new original animated film is already completed and in the can. So it is 100 percent real, occurring, and will be released very soon.”
“BABYLON 5 ANIMATED MOVIE coming from Warner Bros. Animation & WB Home Entertainment!,” he wrote on Twitter. “Classic B5: raucous, heartfelt, nonstop, a ton of fun through time and space & a love letter to the fans. Movie title, release date and other details coming one week from today.”

From 1993 to 1998, Babylon 5 spanned five seasons and seven TV movies. It was never a rating phenomenon, but fans adored its ambitious, heavily serialized five-year story arc, and it won two Hugo Awards and one Saturn Award during its run. In 2021, it was reported that The CW and Straczynski were developing a “ground-up reboot” of Babylon 5 that would focus on protagonist John Sheridan as he assumes command of the space station. Straczynski clarified that the project awaited a production order a year ago while teasing the announcement of a separate animated film.

The Project Was Being Developed In Secret
“Project 2 is the one we’ve been doing in secret with some of the cast,” he wrote at the time. “Until there’s an official announcement, we’re all sworn to secrecy and can’t tell you what it is or even what medium it’s in (film/audio/video/game/print/semaphore).”

Straczynski teased the project further on his Patreon page, stating, “it is not a sidebar story, an unrelated sequel, or a rehash of anything that has come before.” “It’s new, and it’s absolute, unmitigated fun, classic B5 down to the molecular level,” he added.
