Sweet baby, happy birthday! In a body-swapping, time-traveling, trauma-reliving tale of wonder and despair, Russian Doll season two has debuted.

As someone who gave birth to herself on a subway platform in the ’80s, Nadia has certainly been put through the wringer this season. However, the overarching themes of loss, recovery and a longing for more in life persist.

Nadia appears happier towards the conclusion of season two. It didn’t stop the universe from taking advantage of her multiple times, however.

Is she going to have another adventure? Or is this the final chapter in her saga?

Russian Doll Season 3 Potential Release Date: When Can We See It?

Netflix hasn’t officially announced plans for a third season, but the show’s writers and creators certainly have.

Before season one’s release, co-creator Natasha Lyonne acknowledged that the writing team had a three-season plan in place from the beginning.

“I see it fairly concretely, and it will be interesting to see what evolves,” Natasha said in a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The beauty of the writers’ room is that Alan [Charlie Barnett] was a completely different character in the original pitch and pilot than he was in the final product. He truly came to life in the second month of the chamber. When you think back, it’s nearly impossible to imagine the show without Alan until that point.

There has to be room for something beyond my limited imagination in this time to know if that is still where the series begins, middles, and concludes,” he says. For all we know, it could be just two seasons. Perhaps it’s four seasons. “It’s evident to me right now that those three are the culprits.”

Leslye Headland, the show’s co-creator, confirmed this in an interview with RadioTimes: “We initially pitched it like three seasons. There were three ideas: one for the first season, one for seasons 2 and 3, and another for seasons 3 of the show. In that case, I think we’ll go back to one of those concepts.”

We haven’t heard anything to the contrary, therefore we believe that season three still has a lot of room for growth. That is unless a woman from the future appears and alters the course of history to steal it from us first.

Russian Doll Season 3 Cast: Who’s in It?

If the Russian Doll returns, Natasha Lyonne will reprise her role as Nadia Vulvokov, the wisecracking protagonist.

Charlie Bennett is also likely to return as Alan in season three if he doesn’t get sucked into another death time loop.

Maxine, played by Greta Lee, is Nadia’s sweet birthday baby bestie.

That’s not all; there’s also the enigmatic Horse (Brendan Sexton III), a homeless man who shows up at the worst possible times. Do those who suspect him of being responsible for Nadia’s existential nightmare have any basis?

Thus, this seemingly unimportant figure may play a bigger role next season.

That’s not all: Nadia’s past may bring back the young Aunt Ruth, the elderly and now deceased Aunt Ruth, and Nadia’s absentee tearaway mother (played by Chloe Sevigny in the ’80s timeline), all of whom are in the hands of time.

Russian Doll Season 3 Plot: What Will Happen?

Russian Doll is both a joy and a pain since the prior two seasons may stand on their own, but when placed together they form a greater picture.

Time-traveling Nadia is expected to return for the third season, as the second ended in a full-circle moment.

However, the future is unpredictable, much like Nadia’s. But we can’t wait to see where it takes us next.

Nadia and Alan’s deaths kept reoccurring in a time loop until they figured out a way to break it in season one’s main plot point.

During the second season, Nadia spent a lot more time in the past, where she learned about her mother and grandmother’s roles.

With this in mind, we could hypothesize that season three will be set in the future, which was only briefly mentioned in season two but never became the focus of the story.

When questioned by Variety if this is possible, Lyonne said: “Without saying too much, that concept has occurred to me as well. The show will always be a philosophical, psychedelic meditation on the nature of time, mortality, and other such subjects.

This Italian physicist Carlo Rovelli and his notion about the arrow of time and raising the question, ‘How is it possible for me to remember what happened in the past, but not what will happen in the future?” That raises a slew of important issues. I don’t know. They may never let me do this again, who knows?

Throughout the season, we witnessed Nadia grapple with the death of Ruth, and because she was so focused on the future, she failed to see Ruth’s passing.

She had the chance to say farewell to a younger Ruth in the past, but not to Ruth as she is now.

Despite Lyonne’s admission that this was inevitable for Nadia, we may see her say her final goodbye to Ruth in season three.

That “deeper thing” arises because Ruth doesn’t hold that against Nadia because she can’t achieve exactly what she wants in terms of closure with Ruth, she explained.

“I forgive you for your inadequacies as a human, and that is the idea of true unconditional love in life. Ruth is well-versed in Nadia’s personality and can tell that she is making an appearance. The fact that she might get to say her final goodbyes is worth highlighting since you’ve been breaking Season 3.
