Robert Hur Appointed As Special Counsel In Biden Case: Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed Trump appointee Robert Hur to serve as special counsel to look into allegations that Vice President Biden handled sensitive information improperly.
The president’s attorneys claim to have discovered classified documents in two locations and to have informed the National Archives and Records Administration and given them over right away. Early this week, the first report on the finding of secret materials in a Washington, D.C., office used by Biden from mid-2017 to the start of his 2020 campaign, was released. Biden’s attorney revealed additional had been discovered at his Delaware residence a few days later.
Only a few hours after the information surfaced, Garland made Hur’s nomination official while praising his “long and distinguished career as a prosecutor.” His nomination, according to Garland, “underscores to the public the Department’s commitment to both independence and responsibility in particularly sensitive areas, and to making decisions unambiguously informed solely by the facts and the law.”

Hur, who is currently a litigation partner in a Washington, D.C., legal firm, promised in a statement that he would carry out the probe “fairly, impartially, and dispassionately.”
Another special prosecutor is currently looking into suspected mishandling of presidential records and secret materials at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, as well as important elements of the department’s Jan. 6 inquiry.
The DOJ appears to have handled the Trump investigation differently, and House Republicans questioned when the department first became aware of the presence of the sensitive materials discovered in Biden’s baggage in their own response. The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, and Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana wrote to Garland on Friday requesting “any documents and conversations referring or relating to the appointment” of Hur as special counsel as part of their investigation.
Hur was a U.S. attorney in Maryland appointed by then-President Donald Trump, where he headed one of the biggest and busiest U.S. attorney offices in the nation and established strategic priorities. Republican governor of Maryland Larry Hogan applauded Hur’s selection.
“Rob Hur, a former US attorney for Maryland, is a fierce and honourable prosecutor. I trust him to get information and hold the powerful accountable. No one in this nation is above the law, “In a press statement, Hogan added.
Hur also served as Rod Rosenstein’s principal counsellor while he served as the Trump administration’s deputy attorney general for justice, managing all divisions of the department.
While serving as Rosenstein’s principal assistant, Robert Mueller and I often met to oversee the special counsel investigation into Russian election activity. The experience, according to Rosenstein, was especially helpful in preparing Hur for his new post, as heard on NPR’s All Things Considered.

He said that he was performing that duty at a time when we were facing significant political pressure from lawmakers and commentators who had doubts about the Russia inquiry. After graduating from Stanford Law School in 2001, Hur began his legal career by working as a law clerk for Chief Justice William Rehnquist and Judge Alex Kozinski of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, according to the Justice Department.
He then went on to work with current FBI Director Christopher Wray, who was also a Trump appointment, when the latter was in charge of the Criminal Division of the Justice Department. According to the DOJ, he worked on corporate fraud, counterterrorism, and appellate cases there.

Hur has worked as a federal investigative lawyer for the prestigious Washington, D.C., legal firm King & Spalding. Before rejoining the DOJ, he worked there for two years. From 2007 to 2014, he was an associate US attorney in Maryland. Hur prosecuted cases involving gun and drug trafficking, gang violence, and white-collar offences like public corruption and financial institution fraud, finally earning him the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award.
He was chosen by Trump in 2018 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate to serve as Maryland’s top federal prosecutor until his resignation in February 2021. Hur most recently held the position of co-chair of the firm’s Crisis Management Practice Group while working as a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington.
