The African Desperate, a film written and directed by Martine Syms, will premiere in New York City theatres on September 16 before expanding to further cities. Mubi has purchased worldwide distribution rights to the film.
The film premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and made its North American debut as the closing night film at New York’s New Directors/New Films. The filmmakers were represented in the transaction by CAA Media Finance.
Beginning with her MFA graduation from a white liberal arts college in upstate New York in 2017, the film follows artist Palace Bryant (Diamond Stingily) on a very long day that concludes at a Chicago Blue Line Station. Palace successfully avoids the traps of both self-actualization and the art industry.
Syms will screen the film at live events in the United States and Europe in September and October. After its initial run in theatres and related events, the film will be made available on Mubi for global viewing.
Syms, Rocket Caleshu, and Vic Brooks of EMPAC are the film’s producers. Sadie Coles and Bridget Donahue, together with Ways & Means’ Lana Kim and Jett Steiger, are the show’s executive producers.

While filming The African Desperate, the filmmaker admitted that he relied heavily on Mubi. I couldn’t be happier to be working with them to release my film. I’ve been a supporter and reader from the very beginning. This pairing was made in heaven. As a personal endeavor, The African Desperate is entirely self-funded. I took a chance at a dream to make it come true.
In the end, I just want to make films that reflect MY world and are huge, insightful, and inventive. The fact that Mubi is backing the film shows how crucial it is to produce films like these right now. They intervened to unite the cinema and art industries to reach more people with The African Desperate.
