Although he was given 15 consecutive life sentences for the rape, murder, dismemberment, and ingestion of several victims, he only served three years in prison. How Did Jeffrey Dahmer Die?
What happened to Jeffery Dahmer? On November 28, 1994, Christopher Scarver, another convict, brutally murdered Dahmer by beating him to death. Both of these males were inmates in Wisconsin’s Columbia Correctional Institution. Among the convicts, Dahmer was well-known for causing tension. Scarver claims that the serial murderer would serve food in the prison that resembled severed limbs, complete with containers of ketchup for “blood.” Scarver told the New York Post in 2015, “He would position them in locations where people would be.” A few inmates and the guards felt he had over the line. Not everyone behind bars wants to make amends, but he certainly didn’t.
Scarver avoided Dahmer like the plague, yet he never left the house without a newspaper clipping describing the cannibal’s atrocities. Scarver snapped when he realized Dahmer had poked him behind his back. He went to the weight room and got a metal bar, then confronted Dahmer about his misdeeds.
I was so appalled by the thought of it that I had to know if he engaged in such behavior. He couldn’t believe his eyes. Scarver confirmed to the Post that “indeed, he was.” He quickly began to search for an exit. I was able to successfully block his path. Dahmer only needed to be hit in the head twice with the bar. Dahmer’s skull had been crushed, and he was pronounced dead an hour after he was brought in. He was 34. “Unfortunately, he lost his life. Scarver claimed, “I put his head down.”
Rita Isbell, the sister of Dahmer’s final victim, Errol Lindsey, said she expected him to be killed behind bars. For two years, men pretending to be inmates called her, telling her Dahmer would “be taken care of,” according to a report in The New York Times. They allegedly told her, “You don’t know me. Jeffrey Dahmer and I are in this room. You need not fret. No worries; we’ve got this covered. And she went on, “I wouldn’t say I wanted it to happen like this, but Jeffrey tore my family up.”
How Was Jeffrey Dahmer Caught?
On September 8, 1996, Jeffrey Dahmer was apprehended after offering $100 to three men in exchange for them posing for nude photographs. Tracy Edwards, 32, agreed, and when he arrived at Dahmer’s apartment, he found a box of hydrochloric acid, which Dahmer claimed he needed for cleaning, and a foul odor.
Dahmer only managed to handcuff Edwards’s wrist and threatened him with a knife while ordering him to strike a nude pose. Five terrifying hours later, Edwards tricked Dahmer into thinking he needed to use the restroom, punched him when he was off guard, and ran away. Edwards signaled two police officers and claimed a “freak” had snatched a knife from his back.
After returning to Dahmer’s apartment, Edwards saw Polaroids of dead bodies in the bedroom and severed heads in the fridge with the police. The photos were authentic, the officer assured his partner. Dahmer attempted to resist arrest by attacking the police when he realized what they were holding. He reportedly said, “For what I did, I should be dead” as he was pinned to the ground.
Criminal Investigation Bureau agents from Milwaukee conducted a more thorough search of Dahmer’s apartment and found four severed heads in the kitchen, seven skulls in Dahmer’s bedroom, blood drippings in the refrigerator, and two human hearts. His freezer held a torso and a number of other gruesome finds. The chief medical examiner remarked at the time, “It was more like dismantling someone’s museum than an actual crime scene.”
