House Of The Dragon Caraxes Explained: During the time period of House of the Dragon, the Targaryen family rules as absolute monarchs in the fantasy genre. With a dozen or more dragons at their disposal, none of Westeros’s great houses stands a chance against the royal family.
But a coming civil war will soon put an end to the Targaryens’ days as the uncontested rulers of the Seven Kingdoms. Most of the Targaryens’ dragons will be killed in battle, and their rookeries will be destroyed, as the unsatisfied common folk wage this war, known as the Dance of the Dragons.
Who are the key participants in the Dance, then? We all know that the dragons in House of the Dragon are the real stars of the show, so we thought it would be fun to learn more about Caraxes, one of the most pivotal dragons in the series.
Who Is Caraxes?
Daemon Targaryen rode Caraxes, also known as the Blood Wyrm, a massive red dragon, during the Dance of the Dragon.
A fierce and aggressive dragon, Caraxes was about half the size of Vhagar in the books. In the show, Caraxes has a much more distinctive serpentine appearance than Vhagar.

Caraxes Early Life
Unfortunately, our understanding of Caraxes’ history is sketchy at best. In all candor, George RR Martin has never confirmed that the Blood Wyrm was actually born during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. We first learn of Caraxes when Jaehaerys’s eldest son and heir, Aemon, claims the young dragon as his own.
In the wars between the Targaryens and the Dornish, where the prince first gained notoriety, Caraxes and Aemon became known as the fiercest of the new generation of dragons. However, the partnership between Caraxes and Aemon would end suddenly during the Myrish Bloodbath Aemon.
Myrish pirates won this civil war and took over half of the island of Tarth. They responded by dispatching Aemon to Caraxes and the Velaryon fleet. To get to the island first, brave Aemon landed in the air.
Unfortunately, Myrish scouts found Aemon and killed him with a crossbow bolt while he was alone and separated from Caraxes. After Aemon’s demise, Caraxes went back to the Dragonpit and remained there for over a decade before being claimed. However, Daemon Targaryen, the Rogue Prince, eventually claimed Caraxes as his own.
Caraxes During Dance of The Dragon
Caraxes follows Daemon to Essos after being claimed by him and fights alongside him in the war for the Stepstones and the subsequent marriage to Laena Velaryon. A move to Dragonstone for the Red Wyrm would follow Daemon’s third marriage, to Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Caraxes was called to war, however, after the death of King Viserys Targaryen. You see, the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons broke out because Otto and Alicent Hightower anointed Aegon II Targaryen king instead of the rightful heir Rhaenyra.

During the war, Caraxes were deployed on multiple occasions by the Blacks, the supporters of Rhaenyra. His most notable contribution was aiding Daemon in his conquest of Harrenhall, a Black stronghold in The Riverlands.
How Do Caraxes Die?
In the sky above God’s Eye, Caraxes is killed by Daemon and Aemond. Daemon gains the upper hand over his nephew Aemond when he leaps from Caraxes’s back and stabs Aemond through the eye during their battle atop their respective dragons.
Tragically, Vhagar and Caraxes have a head-on collision at the same time, plunging them both into the lake below. Both Vhagar and Aemond are discovered dead shortly after, while Daemon’s remains are lost. Although Caraxes manages to survive the fall, he is severely injured and passes away on the lake’s shores not long after.
