A live-action adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid is long overdue. Fans of Ariel and friends have waited patiently to see the characters of this underwater world come to fulfilment outside of the realm of animation, and the media empire has previously “brought to life” the stories of Cinderella, Dumbo, The Lion King, and, most recently, Pinocchio. The Little Mermaid has been in the works since 2016, and it won’t be until the spring of 2023 before it hits theatres.
When Is The Little Mermaid Release Date?

What is The Little Mermaid About?
“Ariel, a little mermaid with beauty, spirit, and a hunger for adventure, is the protagonist of the classic tale “The Little Mermaid.” Ariel is the youngest and most independent of King Triton’s daughters, but she is enamoured with the surface world and its handsome prince, Eric, on a visit there. Ariel has to follow her heart, despite the fact that mermaids aren’t supposed to talk to humans. As a result of her bargain with the sea witch Ursula, she is given the opportunity to visit land, but she risks losing her life and her father’s throne in the process.”
Who is in The Little Mermaid Cast?
Talented people abound in The Little Mermaid’s ensemble. Actress Melissa Mc Carthy joins Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Being the Ricardos) and Tony winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer) in the picture (Bridesmaids, Nine Perfect Strangers).
Halle Bailey is playing Ariel, the mermaid who everyone adores. The character of Sky Forster on Grown-ish has been Halle’s breakthrough in the acting world, whereas Bailey’s greatest successes have come in the music profession. She and her sister Chloe formed the duo Chloe x Halle in 2015 and have already been nominated for four Grammys. Beyoncé is an investor in Parkwood Entertainment.
Halle has recently spoken publicly about her role as Ariel in The Little Mermaid and her performance of “Part of Your World” from the film at Disney’s D23 Expo. According to Deadline (link opens in new window), she said:
“I’m confident that everyone in this room shares my appreciation for Ariel’s unique place among us. When I was a little girl, I used to swim around in the pool and pretend I was a mermaid. I never thought my fantasy would come true [like this]. … I felt everything she felt throughout the three days we spent filming “Part of Your World,” including her enthusiasm, discomfort, and everything in between. To have Rob directing me and being such a motivating force on this picture was a great pleasure, and it was thrilling to play those feelings.”

The Little Mermaid director
The live-action picture was directed by Rob Marshall, who has won an Emmy and been nominated for an Oscar. He has helmed three popular Disney pictures before: Mary Poppins Returns, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Into the Woods. With Marshall in charge, it’s only logical that the entertainment behemoth will soon have another smash success on its hands.
