Creedmoor Music Festival: Which Has Been Performing in the Region Since the Early 80s?

We’re talking about a gap of 29 years here. The Creedmoor Music Festival has been a staple in the community for forty years.

Wayne Kinton, a pioneer in the bluegrass music scene and a founding member of GrassStreet, reflects on the event’s humble beginnings on a neighbor’s front porch. Kinton’s band was one of eight performing on two stages at the event on Main Street between W. Lyon St. and Park Ave. on Saturday.

From its original blues and R&B focus, the festival has grown to include soul, country, and original rock.

There were over a hundred shops and businesses setting up shop along the streets, and the pleasant conditions helped bring in the crowds. The celebration included a display of automobiles. Also, food. Meat patties with wieners. BBQ. Large, chicken-like thighs and thighs. The cuisine of Thailand. Pizza. Plus, there are always those delicious funnel cakes.

Trey Snide, host of Next Door Radio in Granville County and special guest emcee, was invited to host the event.

“we have a beautiful blend of music and we’re pleased to be back,” Snide said, referring to the band’s return after missing the previous two years due to Covid.

One of the bands, Bellflower, was actually making their festival debut. The five-piece Chapel Hill rock band performs original songs, with some assistance from pocket trumpeter Sam Davis-Castro.

It was a big deal for the band’s leader and creator Franklin Bellflower to be able to play there. The opportunity to play for an audience that might never have heard us before is one of the many reasons why festivals are so amazing.

The Creedmoor Music Festival has been going on for many years, but let’s circle back to Kinton, a stalwart of the event. Both cover and original songs are performed by GrassStreet in a contemporary bluegrass style. The current lineup is a spinoff of the original regional act, Swift Run, which formed in the ’80s.

Kinton grew up in Henderson and currently performs on stage on a 1951 Martin D-18. On Saturday, GrassStreet played a concert that included a variety of gospel and classic rock artists, from Hank Williams to Bob Seger.

Kinton has nothing but praise for the Creedmoor Music Festival and its tireless organisers.

And, he added, they managed to “hang with it” and “built on what they had.” They had a sizable group of enthusiastic volunteers and competent workers. The festival has been running strong for a long time, which is unusual for celebrations of this kind.

Shelby O’Quinn returned to her home state of Missouri after ten years away in order to take part in the event. Her daughter, Katie, was all smiles as she displayed her new face paint.

Vance-Granville Community College’s vendor, like all the others, was kept busy the entire day.
