At Vogue’s Forces of Fashion panel, led by former editor and author Tonne Goodman, model Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford spoke up about their careers, their mother-daughter relationship, and modelling in the age of social media.
The 18-year-old, who is profiled in the November issue of Vogue, praised growing up with Crawford and credited her with providing the best point of comparison. If anyone had a benchmark, I most certainly did, and it was one of the best ones, said Gerber.
She stated that she did not find the modelling industry “a foreign world to move into.” “I thought I knew what that meant. I was somewhat aware of what I was getting into. I was familiar with it. Gerber also discussed the difficulties teenage models face, particularly in the aftermath of the #MeToo movement and Vogue and the CFDA’s commitment to an 18+ modelling policy and updated standards of conduct last summer.
Gerber declared, “Being the first to speak up is difficult in my opinion, but once again, social media played a significant role in this. Suddenly, I realized, “OK, she’s been through this, too, and this person also has.” It offered us the chance to speak about these topics and feel heard and supported and encouraged in doing so.”
She remembered being positively surprised the first time a set member asked her permission before tucking up her shirt. “As a model, I never gave that any thought. But when they asked, I was all of a sudden like, “You know what? It makes sense, doesn’t it? Just as it is acceptable to inquire, “Can I tuck your shirt in?” Something made it clear to me that everyone was now genuinely trying to ensure everyone felt comfortable, “said Gerber.
