Didi Gregorius was born on February 18th, 1990, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It was his father, Johannes Gregorius, Sr., who pitched in the Dutch professional baseball league and his mother, Sheritsa Stroop, who was a member of the Netherlands women’s national softball team, that raised him to become a professional baseball player. Gregorius’ paternal grandfather, Antonio, was a former professional baseball pitcher who represented the Netherlands Antilles at the 1955 Pan American Games.
After moving to Curaçao when Gregorius was just five years old, he began playing tee-ball and minor league baseball. After the Reds offered to bring him to the United States as a teenager, Gregorius signed with them in 2007 as a free agent.
