Characters

Fumiya Tomozaki

High school freshman Tomozaki has always been the school’s social pariah. His in-game handle, “nanashi,” has propelled him to the top of the leaderboards in the wildly popular Japanese MMO Attack Families. His life is a “trash game” because it lacks a walkthrough, character strength is determined at birth, and there are unexplainable imbalances, while his gaming life, Attack Families, is a “godly game” where there is perfect balance as equal amounts of effort would be rewarded with equal amounts of success. When he learns that his seemingly flawless classmate Hinami, who has always been in second place on the Attack Families leaderboards, actually sees life as a game and offers to be his guide, he begins to see things in a new light.

Aoi Hinami

Tomozaki’s classmate Hinami is widely considered as a paragon of human perfection. She is the leader of her own class clique, has the highest GPA in the school, and always places first in track and field contests, all while retaining a warm and approachable demeanour. She works an incredible amount behind the scenes and is a firm believer that you need to put up a real, honest effort to achieve your goals. Hinami, who plays under the name “NO NAME” in Attack Families, is a tremendous fan of the game and has a great deal of admiration for “nanashi,” a player she has studied extensively in an attempt to match or even surpass in skill. She rose through the ranks to lead the student body eventually.

Minami Nanami

She is a popular, active, and mischievous classmate of Tomozaki’s named Hinami’s and given the nickname “Mimimi” by her classmates and “Minmi” by Tama because of her participation in the track and field club. She has a positive attitude, but her self-doubt and personality issues cause her to cave quickly if she doesn’t want to ruin the moment. Mimimi has been relentless in her pursuit of the lonely Tama’s friendship, and as a result, the two have become quite close. She has a ridiculously silly appearance, but she is an academic and athletic prodigy who can never topple Hinami from her top spot. She lost the student council election where she ran against Hinami.

Fūka Kikuchi

Tomozaki’s quiet, bookworm classmate Fka is a regular in the library. Tomozaki’s clever evaluations on Attack Families in the library piqued her interest at first since she thought he was a fan of the same author she was, but in reality Tomozaki was just using those books as a front. Tomozaki comes clean about the misunderstanding, and he and Fka form a friendship based on Tomozaki’s determination to read and comprehend the books Fka enjoys. After deciding that Fka would be the ideal girlfriend for Tomozaki, Hinami sets up a number of scenarios in which Tomozaki is forced to admit his true intentions. She eventually starts dating Tomozaki.

Hanabi Natsubayashi

Tama is a friendless classmate of Tomozaki’s who is known for being direct and unfriendly. Tama holds Mimimi dear since Mimimi was the first person to try to break down her defences and befriend her. Her forthrightness makes her unpopular and once landed her in hot water when she publicly denounced Erika’s harassment and bullying, making her a target of harassment and bullying herself. Tomozaki, Mizusawa, Takei, and Fka, among others, realised that she was being bullied and took it upon themselves to assist her in becoming more socially adept.

Yuzu Izumi

Izumi is a friend of Erika’s and a classmate of Tomozaki’s because she is sociable and kind. She avoids confrontation, therefore she rarely speaks up when Erika does anything she finds inappropriate. Tomozaki chose Izumi, the girl who sits next to him in class, as his first buddy to make in an effort to improve his social skills. Because of her feelings for Nakamura, Izumi has asked Tomozaki to coach her in the game of Attack Families so that she can be Nakamura’s training partner.

Takahiro Mizusawa

Tomozaki’s popular, boisterous, and handsome classmate Mizusawa is also a member of Nakamura’s in-group and is widely regarded as the group’s intellectual and emotional centre. He’s Tomozaki’s inspiration for his charming demeanour and ability to flirt with women.

Shūji Nakamura

Tomozaki is the unofficial leader of his own group of friends, and one of his most influential followers is Nakamura. As seen in his reaction to his loss against Tomozaki on Attack Families, he is too competitive and petty when he loses, writing off his defeat as a fluke and vowing to get his own back in a revenge bout. Given his merits, he comes around to including Tomozaki in his inner circle.

Takei

Takei is a lighthearted and naive classmate of Tomozaki, who serves as Nakamura’s group’s unofficial mood creator. Because of his reputation as the group’s dumbest member, he is routinely left out of important discussions, like the one where they plotted to use a camping trip to bring Nakamura and Izumi together. Volunteering for leadership roles in class and performing humorous antics on the spot are just two examples of how he enjoys the limelight.

Erika Konno

Throughout the series, it becomes clear that she has feelings for Nakamura and has tried to declare them to him, only to be rejected.

She then claims to be uninterested in the occasion and that she just confessed to him out of convenience, not because she liked him.
