In the pantheon of iconic shonen “big three” anime with One Piece and Naruto, Bleach is a sad case for its fans: the anime was abruptly discontinued in March 2012, and the manga’s last arc felt rushed to some readers. After what felt like an eternity, it appears that studio Pierrot is ready to give Bleach a second chance.
The Fall 2022 season will feature a number of fan-favorite shonen series, such as the sixth season of My Hero Academia and the return of Spy x Family, but for seasoned viewers, the return of Bleach is the true highlight of this high-voltage anime season. Viewers may want to brush up on the story and characters of Bleach before the launch of the exciting new storyline, the “Thousand-Year Blood War” arc.
The Story & Characters of Bleach So Far
Bleach is a light isekai-tinged supernatural action/adventure anime. Since the beginning of the novel, when the mysterious Soul Reaper Rukia Kuchiki bestowed her abilities upon the psychically attuned high school student Ichigo Kurosaki, Ichigo has often come to the rescue with his trusty zanpakuto. Ichigo’s actual antagonist, the treacherous Captain Sosuke Aizen, who planned to usurp the throne of heaven and rule over all of creation, soon emerged.
As a result of Ichigo, Orihime Inoue, Uryu Ishida the Quincy archer, and Chad’s efforts, the Soul Reaper alliance were able to defeat this monster menace. Ichigo believed his journey was done when calm briefly returned. But the real fight has only barely begun.

After losing his Soul Reaper abilities after fighting Aizen in the original Bleach anime, Ichigo met the spiritually attuned members of Xcution, who used the Fullbring power to give Ichigo new abilities. Then, once Ichigo’s actual Soul Reaper powers were reawakened by Rukia, he once again rescued the day from Kugo Ginjo, reuniting with his zanpakuto Zangetsu and all of his comrades, both human and Soul Reaper.
Although Ichigo thought he had finally won peace, the Wandenreich, the hidden empire of furious Quincy, will rise between the end of the Bleach anime and the start of the second season. After being defeated by the Soul Society a thousand years ago, Quincy and their great king, Yhwach, are hellbent on exacting revenge on the Soul Society at any cost. They will not rest until they have destroyed the Soul Reapers and remade the world to suit Yhwach’s frightening aspirations.
Where To Watch The New Bleach Anime
The new Bleach anime is both a sequel to and a reimagining of studio Pierrot’s original 2004–2012 animated series. Studio Pierrot is back to adapting Tite Kubo’s manga into an animated television series, this time using state-of-the-art animation techniques to do the manga justice. Composer Shiro Sagisu will once again score the forthcoming Bleach anime under the direction of director Tomohisa Taguchi.
The new Bleach anime will be released in four seasons, the first of which will premiere on TV Tokyo on October 11, 2022. The Bleach anime will be broadcast in the West via streaming behemoth Crunchyroll at the same time as it airs in Japan. To begin with, the Bleach anime will likely only be available with the Japanese dub and English subtitles.
However, other subtitle languages will likely be added in the future. There will also be an English dub of the upcoming Bleach anime, though it is currently unknown when this will begin showing. With the original Bleach manga being complete, the new anime will most likely not feature any filler episodes, in stark contrast to the original Bleach anime’s liberal usage of filler arcs.
