Welcome To Wrexham Season 2: The protagonists of Welcome to Wrexham are two buddies who pool their meagre resources to purchase a struggling Welsh football team.
Okay, “scrape” is probably pushing it for two successful actors like Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to call themselves friends. This is just partially accurate, but everything else is correct. Wrexham A.F.C., a Welsh football team that competes in England’s fifth division, was indeed purchased by them. In our preview, we referred to the show as a “real-life version of Ted Lasso,” and after watching the first 18 episodes, we were left wanting more.
Thank goodness, that’s precisely what’s happening. Reynolds and McElhenney confirmed the second season shortly after the first season’s finale aired. So if you haven’t seen the first season yet, read up on what to expect and when to expect it, and then head over to Hulu (or Disney Plus outside of the U.S.).
Welcome To Wrexham Season 2 Release Date
Although Ryan Reynolds tweeted (opens in new window) that production had begun on Season 2 shortly after the conclusion of the first season on October 12, 2022, we still don’t know when it will premiere.
In truth, we have no idea what topics will be explored in the second season. The first season began in September 2020, when Reynolds and McElhenney purchased the club, and ended in late May 2022. As a result, this second season is expected to be rather condensed, encompassing only the 2022-2023 academic year, concluding no later than the first week of June 2023.
That would make a premiere date in late August 2023 a reasonable expectation. There is already established precedent for sticking to that timeframe given that the first season premiered on August 24, 2022.

Welcome To Wrexham Season 1 Recap
To kick off the first season of Welcome to Wrexham, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney join forces to purchase Wrexham A.F.C., the world’s third-oldest football club. Despite its rich history, the Welsh club Wrexham was relegated to the English National League due to poor management.
Because of the Sunderland Til’ I Die documentaries and the encouragement of his Mythic Quest writing roommate Humphrey Ker, McElhenney decided he wanted to buy a football team. Although McElhenney was quite successful thanks to his programme It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, he was not as famous or affluent as some of his Hollywood counterparts. After a lot of work, he finally got in touch with Reynolds, and the group collectively purchased a football franchise.
Reynolds and McElhenney’s takeover of the club is the storyline for the rest of the season. It takes a lot of time and money to bring in front office employees and coaches, and to tidy up the grounds. With real money on the line, the two will lose money every year the team remains in English Football League Two rather than being promoted.
Wrexham has a happy ending worthy of Cinderella. After starting the season in 20th place, the squad improved to 8th under the leadership of Reynolds and McElhenny. The next year, in 2021-2022, they finish in second place and qualify for the National League promotion playoff. However, they ultimately fall short. Wrexham’s playoff loss to Grimsby Town was devastating, and they ultimately lost to Bromley in the FA Trophy final. It’s true that the club and Wrexham as a whole have never been more optimistic, but it’s not saying much.
Welcome To Wrexham Season 2 Rumored Storylines
The good news is that we have no idea how Welcome to Wrexham season two will end at this time. We probably won’t find out until the end of the 2022-2023 season, which isn’t until late May or early June of that year.
The early indicators are that this season will be filled with exciting highs, albeit not without its share of drama. Currently, Wrexham A.F.C. is in second place in the National League table, one point behind first-place Notts County. If Wrexham wants to avoid the promotion playoff and avoid a repeat of last year’s heartbreaking playoff loss, they will need to pass Notts County for first place.

There are other leagues to consider besides the National League. The FA Cup and FA Trophy are two additional trophies that can be won. Only Wrexham’s FA Cup matches have started so far; the Dragons are currently in the second round.
