The Dallas Cowboys were defeated by the Houston Texans 20-14 in their final dress rehearsal. In the preseason, the score doesn’t matter; it’s all about how the players performed. Players whose stock rose earlier in the article will now be compared to those whose stock fell. Even if they didn’t perform well, coaches can tell a lot about a player based on how many snaps they took or when they played.
Jaylon Smith
It wasn’t as if Smith had a terrible performance that was obvious to everyone. It wasn’t even close to that. When it comes to linebackers, he’s concerned about where he currently is in the ranks. The highest-paid linebacker is now ranked fourth among the four players projected to fill out the rotation.
In a must-read piece analyzing the snap counts of the starting defense in the first half of the game, the indomitable OCC brought this up to us. Keanu Neal had 15, Leighton Vander Esch had 13, and Smith had 12 first-half snaps apiece. Whenever the Cowboys resorted to two linebackers on the field, the combo of Parsons and Neal had five more snaps than LVE and Smith had.
As it stands, Jaylon Smith will have to fight hard to earn his spot in the starting lineup now that the defense has a new coaching structure in place.
Any Qb Who Played Not Named Cooper Rush
This game’s quarterbacking was a little better than expected. Cooper Rush’s impressive performance has already been mentioned. Additionally, Dak Prescott completed 51 of 52 throws (through the air) in his pregame workout, and he hasn’t had any setbacks as he increases his volume.
Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci both had a poor performance, which tallied to the other side of the ledger. DiNucci’s performance makes one wonder if he will even make the roster or practice squad, as neither player contributed to the game. That can be done with three interceptions. Mike McCarthy’s lust for the boy may be the only thing keeping him alive.

Semi Fehoko
Fehoko had two receptions for 24 yards on the night, but he didn’t score. One of his issues is that he hasn’t been able to stand out amongst the group of receivers below him in the depth chart. Compared to Brandon Smith, Osirus Mitchell had two catches for 31 yards, and Smith scored a touchdown last week.
Despite his impressive stature and athleticism, Fehoko has yet to shine against the team’s second and third-string players. A 15-yard offensive pass interference penalty for blocking a screen pass too early ruined his night. He had a rough night overall. For Fehoko to avoid the practice squad, something needs to happen.
Kelvin Joseph
It appears that his playing time will be limited in the early stages of the season. The second-round pick had great expectations, but he was limited to the second half of this dress rehearsal. Even though Jourdan Lewis is the slot receiver opposite Anthony Brown, both Maurice Canady and Nahshon Wright have had strong preseasons and training camps.
Despite his impressive physical attributes, Joseph has struggled to make an impact for the Dallas Cowboys. Though he has a promising future, his present progress is glacial.
