Selma Blair, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and featured in a documentary about her experience, has now written a book about overcoming adversity.
The upcoming memoir “Mean Baby,” Blair’s debut book, will be an introspective look at the actor’s worst times. She recalls being sexually abused by a teacher when she was young, hiding out in the bottom of liquor bottles at the age of seven, and feeling physical discomfort that she now believes may have been the earliest signs of multiple sclerosis.

She admitted she had a serious alcohol problem all through her formative years and into her teen and young adult years.

“It was a challenge. Just saying. Yet perhaps it was simpler. Perhaps I would not have made it without alcohol.”
Blair also discusses the persistent physical discomfort she has felt since early childhood in her book.
Blair described the symptoms she was having at the time as “so many things that were very symptomatic of MS.” They suspected I had leukemia.
It was a high temperature that never went away, but I didn’t feel any better. … Illnesses I had as a kid were linked to each other. By the time I turned 23, I was positive I had it. It has been there for a very long time.
Blair persisted despite her weak health and alcohol addiction. The 1998 film “Brown’s Requiem” marked the beginning of her acting career, and her subsequent appearances in “Cruel Intentions” and “Legally Blonde” propelled her to stardom at the age of 26.
But she continued to fight against horrible monsters within.
The actor said in her autobiography that she “resisted the need to drink as much as I could, as often as I could” for almost 20 years.
