Renfield Movie: A new take on a classic horror icon is in the works. A film based on Count Dracula’s loyal servant, Renfield, will premiere in theatres in the spring of 2019. Renfield first appeared in Bram Stoker’s 1897 Dracula novel as the titular assistant, helping Dracula in his quest to transform humans into vampires.
From 1922’s Nosferatu and 1931’s Dracula to more recent works like Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 Dracula and the Penny Dreadful series, the character has appeared on screen for over a century. Here, Renfield will be taking on the modern world in a reimagined form.
Renfield Movie Release Date
Among the many films that will be released in theatres next year from Universal Pictures are the highly anticipated Fast X and the star-studded Oppenheimer, both of which will be crucial to the success of the studio’s ambitious 2023 plans. Deadline reports that the Dracula comedy Renfield, which features its own impressive cast, will debut in theatres on April 14, 2023. Even though we have a few months to go, the 2023 film schedule is looking better by the day (or night, if you’re a vampire).

Renfield Movie Cast
Famous actors and actresses populate the cast of the Renfield film. In all likelihood, Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, and Awkwafina will stand out the most. They’ll play the film’s three leads, and a few more well-known actors will pop up in supporting roles.
A slew of A-list actors have signed on to star in Universal’s upcoming vampire film. Nicholas Hoult, star of Those Who Wish Me Dead, will play Renfield, the titular henchman who has been through a lot over the years. Nicolas Cage, who starred in the film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, will play Count Dracula.
For Nic Cage fans, this is not his first time starring in a vampire movie. You may be remembering the camp classic Vampire’s Kiss from 1988, a film more famous for its “You Don’t Say” meme than for its actual narrative.
Awkwafina portrays Rebecca Quincy, Renfield’s new ally and possible love interest. Ben Schwartz of Parks and Recreation fame will play gangster Teddy Lobo. Adrian Martinez, known for his role as Walter Mitty in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, now portrays Awkwafina’s police colleague, Chris Marcos.
Shohreh Aghdashloo, of The Expanse, plays Ella, one of the city’s most dreaded crime bosses. Caitlyn, as Bess Rous from Murder in the First, is a member of a support group for those in toxic relationships and will likely help Renfield get insight into his own relationship. While Caroline Williams portrays a character named Vanessa, James Moses Black plays Captain Browning, who may play a part in the police force. Brandon Scott Jones, who played Ghosts’ breakout role, is also joining the cast, though his role is still unknown.

Renfield Movie Plot
Most of what we know about the horror film’s plot comes from interviews with its creators. We already know it will be a horror comedy about Renfield falling in love with a local traffic cop while maintaining his undying loyalty to the Count.
The film’s contemporary New Orleans setting has drawn comparisons to Taikia Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows. Another horror comedy film (though, to be fair, mostly comedy) about vampires in the present-day United States, Waititi’s film was a lot of fun.
Cartoonist Robert Kirkman came up with the concept for the story. Renfield “a story about him being Dracula’s henchman and how shitty a job that is,” as described by The Walking Dead comic book author Robert Kirkman. Additionally, he has stated that the film will be “a fun, extremely violent comedy,” so while there will be scary moments, there will also be plenty of comedic ones.
