According to CBS New York, a U-Haul truck struck pedestrians in a Brooklyn neighborhood on Monday morning, leaving one person dead and at least eight others hurt, including a police officer.
Police Commissioner of New York City Keechant Sewell described it as “violent rampage.” Sewell told reporters at a news conference in the afternoon that the truck struck pedestrians, bikers, and the responding police officer at seven different points in the Bay Ridge neighbourhood.
According to CBS New York, police reported Monday night that a 44-year-old man had died from his wounds and one of the injured people was in critical condition.
According to two sources and senior investigative producer Pat Milton of CBS News, Weng Sor, 62, is the name of the suspect who has been brought into custody. According to the reports, the suspect, who has a driver’s license from Nevada, hired the vehicle in Daytona Beach, Florida, in January. The sources claim that the suspect may have been residing in the truck.

Sewell stated during the conference that the suspected driver was apprehended close to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel’s entrance, which leads to New Jersey. “a violent rampage through Brooklyn.” The truck was stopped on a sidewalk surrounded by police cars and ambulances. According to Sewell, who spoke to the media, investigators are unsure if the string of attacks was planned.
“At this time, we have no indication that there is any terrorism involvement in this incident,” the police commissioner said. “However, as always, we will continue to investigate this incident with the full resources of NYPD.”
As the station broadcast live video from above the area, it was reported by CBS New York that emergency reaction teams had hurried to the intersection of Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue.
According to a previous statement to CBS News from the New York Police Department, the U-Haul box truck eluded a traffic stop close to the crossing.
According to the NYPD, three other injured people were riding mopeds, and at least one of those struck by the U-Haul was a pedestrian.
After hearing rumours that the U-Haul truck had struck people, the police chased after the vehicle, Sewell said. Whether the truck struck pedestrians at the Bay Ridge Parkway and Fifth Avenue crossing was the last location is unknown.
After the incident, the driver of the U-Haul attempted to flee the scene until police were able to stop it several streets away, according to CBS New York. He allegedly struck two police cars, fled briefly, and then returned. Authorities confirmed that he was taken into custody soon after.

Police completely blocked off the Bay Ridge crossroads where the incident took place, and according to CBS New York, the NYPD bomb squad had arrived to inspect the U-Haul as a precaution. Bay Ridge is located in the district of New York City Councilman Justin Brannan, who addressed the incident on Twitter.
“A man driving a U-Haul went on a rampage in Bay Ridge. He was just apprehended in Sunset Park. Several people were hit and badly injured. We have no idea of motives at this time but this wasn’t an accident,” Brannan wrote. In a subsequent tweet, the councilman said that the suspect “was actually arrested near the BK Battery Tunnel,” adding, “at least 6 people” are now suspected to have been hit by the U-Haul, with two “in very bad shape.”
