Jon Batiste is leaving “The Late Show” after seven seasons, Stephen Colbert said Thursday night. “Personal and professional interests” are why he’s leaving. Louis Cato, who has served as interim conductor this summer, will take over permanently and rename Colbert’s band “The Late Show Band.”
Cato takes over permanently when the show returns Sept. 6.
“Louis has been really humble this summer, so he won’t brag. I’ll try. Colbert: “He’s a musical genius.” “He plays every instrument there. He’ll play Mozart on a shoehorn in an afternoon.

Cato joined “The Late Show” under Colbert. The new band will include Louis Fouché, Jon Lampley, Endea Owens, and Nêgah Santos.
“Working on this programme with some of the most amazing musicians and creatives I know has been a real honour,” remarked Cato. “After seven years of learning from Jon and Stephen, I’m delighted to continue their excellence.”
Batiste won five Grammys from 11 nominations, including album of the year. Batiste received an Oscar for “Soul’s” original score in 2021.

Cato has collaborated with Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, John Legend, Talib Kweli, Snarky Puppy, David Sanborn, George Duke, Bobby McFerrin, Marcus Miller, John Scofield, and A Tribe Called Quest.
