Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport serve as Spirit Airways’ main hubs for flights throughout the United States and the Caribbean, Mexico, and Latin America (Hollywood International Airport).
Fort Lauderdale, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago-O’Hare Airport, Las Vegas, Chicago-O’Hare International Airport, and Atlantic City are the airline’s primary emphasis cities, as is Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. In February 2015, Skytrax rated Spirit as the sole US airline with a 2-star rating.
History
Originally established in 1964 as a subsidiary of Clipper Trucking, Spirit Airline became an independent company in 1980 and was subsequently acquired by Charter One. In the spring of 1993, Spirit Airlines commenced regular service to Florida destinations.
The following five years saw rapid growth for Spirit as it added new markets like Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Los Angeles, and New York to its service. The airline’s corporate headquarters were originally located in Detroit, Michigan, but were relocated to their current location in November 1999. On March 6th, 2007, Spirit began its shift to an ultra-low-cost carrier.
Fleet
Spirit Airlines now has a fleet of 67 Airbus aircraft, each of which is an average of 4.8 years old. After Virgin America and Volaris, Spirit’s Airbus fleet is the third-youngest in the Americas. As of October 2013, Spirit had negotiated a deal to lease five new A320 NEOs and three used ones from International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC). Spirit Airline ordered 30 Airbus A320-200 planes in 2006, and the first planes were delivered in March 2010.

Spirit Airlines has won multiple awards for its unique strategy to expanding the travel market while also being the industry’s most fuel-efficient carrier. 52 locations are currently serviced by Spirit Airlines, including Central and South American destinations as well the United States. In addition to Dallas/Fort Worth and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, the company also has operations in Chicago, Detroit, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

As part of the deal announced on Thursday, Spirit shareholders would receive an upfront payment of $2.50 per share, payable upon approval of the transaction by Spirit stockholders, for a total cash payout of $33.50 per share.

After December, JetBlue will pay Spirit owners an additional 10 cents per month, which may lift the share price to $34.15 per share. JetBlue will pay Spirit $70 million and its stockholders an additional $400 million if authorities reject the deal.
While Spirit was seeking shareholder approval for a lower-priced merger with Frontier, JetBlue was launching a hostile bid for the airline.
