Sen. Patty Murray Sworn In As President Pro Tempore: Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat from Washington, appeared to be in danger of losing her position two months prior. She is currently the next in line for the presidency.
Ms. Murray, 72, was swiftly chosen to serve as the Senate’s president pro tempore after being sworn in for her sixth term on Tuesday. In a Wednesday interview, Ms. Murray joked that she was second in line before reflecting on the significance of the job and the history she had made as the first female to hold the position.
“It’s not the accessories to it. It’s your job,” she added. “I have a pretty important task to accomplish, and I want to ensure that I succeed at it.”
Despite predictions of a close campaign, Ms. Murray defeated her Republican opponent Tiffany Smiley in November and won a second term by roughly 15 points.
She was a member of the Senate’s largest class of women when she was first elected in 1992. She positioned herself in her campaign as “simply a mom in tennis shoes,” someone who could relate to the everyday worries of suburban working mothers.
As the head of the Senate’s health, education, labor, and pensions committee, Ms. Murray, a former preschool teacher, has prioritized education. She has also spoken out in favor of other issues that disproportionately affect women, such as child care, and for the right to an abortion, particularly in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
