Officials announced on Friday that five Memphis Police Department officers had been fired for excessive use of force, failing to step in, and failing to assist following the arrest of a man during a traffic check who later passed away in the hospital.

Tyre Nichols, 29, a Black man, was arrested on January 7. The police chief claimed that Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr., and Justin Smith were all implicated.

The discipline was implemented following the end of an internal inquiry by the Memphis Police Department regarding the arrest of Nichols, who passed away three days later, according to the authorities.

Family members claim that police beat Nichols and gave him a heart attack. According to the authorities, Nichols had a medical emergency.
