House Of The Dragon: House of the Dragon, a prequel series set 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, has wasted no time in introducing us to a slew of new, never-before-seen characters.
Since the story takes place two centuries in the past, it’s safe to assume that every character in the prequel will meet a violent end at some point.
As of the later episodes of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra Targaryen has quickly risen to prominence as a major player in the ongoing struggle for the Iron Throne.
Rhaenyra Targaryen In House Of The Dragon
In the pilot episode of HBO’s fantasy series House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra Targaryen is one of the first characters we meet.
Right off the bat, Rhaenyra is established as an important figure because she is King Viserys I’s daughter, but she gains even more prominence when the king’s chance for a male heir is taken away and she is declared the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
Several groups are likely at work behind the scenes to ensure that the Seven Kingdoms do get a male heir after the historic announcement that Rhaenyra will become the first ruling queen in Westeros’s history.

In Episode 3, Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne will be put to the test when Viserys and his new wife, Alicent Hightower (Rhaenyra’s childhood friend), have a son named Aegon.
The Targaryen Civil War
The Targaryen Civil War, also known as the Dance of the Dragons, began when Rhaenyra and her half-brother Aegon both made claims to the Iron Throne.
Aegon’s supporters in King’s Landing moved swiftly after King Viserys’s death to have him coronated as Aegon II, but they kept the news from Rhaenyra, who was at Dragonstone preparing to give birth.

When she learned that Aegon II had been crowned, she quickly planned her own coronation to assert her right to the throne.
How Does Rhaenyra Targaryen Die?
In the books, Rhaenyra Targaryen meets her end when Aegon II’s dragon, Sunfyre, kills and devours her in the waning days of the Targaryen Civil War.
People in King’s Landing rose up against Rhaenyra after she had ruled for six months after taking the city from Aegon earlier in the conflict and killing Aegon’s wife and sister, Helaena Targaryen, a popular figure in the city.
In order to get to Dragonstone, Rhaenyra had to abandon King’s Landing and even sell her crown to pay for the trip.
When she finally reached the Targaryen stronghold, however, one of her own followers betrayed her and handed her over to Aegon.
