Gears of War Netflix movie: Choose you… Delta Squad captain with a coin toss. Production has begun on a live-action film and animated series based on the Gears of War video game for Netflix. Bringing on board a significant video game series is a surefire way to keep your streaming service near the top of any rankings of the best streaming services.
Fifteen years after the initial cash grab for Gears of War rights (New Line had temporarily landed a deal(opens in new tab). Still, nothing came of it), it appears that the popular video game series will indeed, eventually, get an adaptation. Much of the action will probably include commando Marcus Fenix, his son JD, and the Locust Horde, just like in the games.
The report comes 16 years after the release of the first Gears of War game, which was published by The Hollywood Reporter(opens in new tab) (Nov. 7, 2006). The concept looks to start with a real-life movie. Whether or not this will be one of Netflix’s best movies remains to be seen, but the early buzz suggests it has a good shot (if Sony’s Uncharted movie can also rank highly there…).

Gears of War Netflix movie: Release Date Speculation
The Gears of War Netflix adaptation has yet to get a director, cast, or producers. Thus the release date is likely at least two years away. When counting from the time Netflix acquired distribution rights, the release of Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, Netflix’s most recent action film, took two years and 4.5 months.
The war between humans and the Locust Horde (reptilian hominoids) on the planet Sera sounds more visual-effects heavy than man vs. zombies in Las Vegas, so a live-action Gears of War movie could take even longer to produce.
The Gears of War movie on Netflix is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2025, with a possible release in the winter of 2024/2025.
Gears of War Netflix movie: Potential Plots
Humanity’s internal strife on Sera, a planet not unlike Earth, threatens to destabilize the entire world. And that’s just before the Locust Horde emerges from Sera’s bowels.
Marcus Fenix, a COG commando, begins his involvement in the conflicts before the Locust Horde with a mission to steal the Hammer of Dawn. The Union of Independent Republics (UIR), an opposing human faction, created this instrument to facilitate laser strikes from orbit to the surface. Adam Fenix, Marcus’s dad, made it.
The Locust Horde attacks shortly after humanity declares a ceasefire, nearly destroying the COG army. I won’t give any spoilers about what happens next, but know that it’s the beginning of a significant plot point in the show.
James Dominic “JD” Fenix, Marcus’s son, also enlists in the armed forces. Through JD, we are introduced to Kait Diaz, the protagonist of one of the game’s other major stories, which delves into her history with the Locust Horde.
Gears of War Netflix movie outlook
It would make perfect sense for Gears of War to get its own Netflix film. A science fiction video game movie would be a first for the giant red streaming machine, which has proven to be fond of high-budget action films (The Gray Man 2 is confirmed).
That seems like it could be the most significant danger, as it has a higher budget. Considering Netflix’s track record with animated programs like Cuphead, The Witcher, and Cyberpunk, they might be a better fit for a Gears of War cartoon. This is why it came as such a surprise to us when it placed second.
