Starfield Gameplay

It feels like we’ve been waiting a lifetime to see Starfield in action, but thanks to Todd Howard, we’ve finally seen it in the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase 2022.

It begins with a space explorer disembarking with a Vasco robot on the moon Kreet and follows them as they take their first steps onto this sulfurous planet. This brief phase, in which the explorer encounters space animals and pirates, has attracted comparisons to No Man’s Sky gameplay, with scanners, weaponry, and worlds taking center stage. We also get a glimpse at the zero gravity fighting, which looks nasty and fulfilling like Fallout, as well as lockpicking and hacking.

Then we’re transported to New Atlantis, one of the largest Starfield cities, where we first meet the Constellation, a group of the last space explorers. Following that comes a sort of montage, with narratives from various factions, missions, and Starfield worlds all coming to the forefront. Based on this gameplay peek, which is pure Bethesda, it appears we’ll have plenty of dialogue options and choices.

The gameplay reveals also discuss the Starfield character creator, which will let you customize things like your biometric ID, body, and attributes. Later on, a skill tree and an outpost creation system are revealed, allowing you to set up a “home away from home” run by NPCs you acquire along the journey.

We also got our first glimpse at the game’s ship editor, which appears to let you personalize pretty much about anything. These spacecraft can be flown to any of the game’s “1,000 planets” and utilized to combat foes in Star Wars Squadrons-style dog battles.

It also includes some audio lines from a member of the Constellation pushing you to search for artifact remnants throughout the galaxy in order to solve the age-old question of ‘What more is out there?’ The most current trailer debuted at the 2023 Xbox Showcase.
