Originally scheduled for November 2022, Bethesda announced a Starfield delay in March 2023, putting the game back to September. Thankfully, we still got a good look at the new open-world game at the Xbox and Bethesda showcases this summer.
To put it mildly, Starfield has promise. It has the potential to be one of the best PC games ever made. Although the finer elements of the space-faring, open-world game are yet to emerge, we do know a few things. We know when Starfield will be released, and we’ve cobbled together every last shred of information from interviews, trailers, and dev remarks to develop a picture of what we might be playing this year. Here’s all we know thus far about Starfield.
Starfield Release Date
The Xbox Series X|S and PC versions of Starfield will go on sale on September 6, 2023. Although the RPG has already missed one release window and one release date, it is now ready for launch. On launch day, the game will also be added to Game Pass.
IGN tweeted on his account that Starfield released to date and, comes in each edition. You can see below:
This was initially made known in a game’s launch-date announcement trailer. Additional assurance that the date won’t change came during the Xbox and Starfield showcase in June 2023, which you can watch in its entirety here.
Starfield’s debut was postponed to the first half of 2023 from its intended November 2022 launch date. This window was also missed, and a new date of September 6 was chosen. Check out the complete five-year history of the Starfield release date here, which details all the declarations, postponements, leaks, and rumors.
It feels like we’ve been waiting a lifetime to see Starfield in action, but thanks to Todd Howard, we’ve finally seen it in the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase 2022.
It begins with a space explorer disembarking with a Vasco robot on the moon Kreet and follows them as they take their first steps onto this sulfurous planet. This brief phase, in which the explorer encounters space animals and pirates, has attracted comparisons to No Man’s Sky gameplay, with scanners, weaponry, and worlds taking center stage. We also get a glimpse at the zero gravity fighting, which looks nasty and fulfilling like Fallout, as well as lockpicking and hacking.
Then we’re transported to New Atlantis, one of the largest Starfield cities, where we first meet the Constellation, a group of the last space explorers. Following that comes a sort of montage, with narratives from various factions, missions, and Starfield worlds all coming to the forefront. Based on this gameplay peek, which is pure Bethesda, it appears we’ll have plenty of dialogue options and choices.
The gameplay reveals also discuss the Starfield character creator, which will let you customize things like your biometric ID, body, and attributes. Later on, a skill tree and an outpost creation system are revealed, allowing you to set up a “home away from home” run by NPCs you acquire along the journey.
We also got our first glimpse at the game’s ship editor, which appears to let you personalize pretty much about anything. These spacecraft can be flown to any of the game’s “1,000 planets” and utilized to combat foes in Star Wars Squadrons-style dog battles.

The Starfield teaser trailer, which you can see below, gave us our first glimpse at Bethesda’s next game in 2021. This in-engine trailer contains no gameplay, but it does provide a solid overview of the setting in which we’ll be playing.
It also includes some audio lines from a member of the Constellation pushing you to search for artifact remnants throughout the galaxy in order to solve the age-old question of ‘What more is out there?’ The most current trailer debuted at the 2023 Xbox Showcase.
