The release date of Tears of the Kingdom is 5/12/2023, thanks to a clip seen at the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation.

There is still time until then, though, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that the release date doesn’t get pushed again.

Pre-orders for Tears of the Kingdom were made available on Amazon.com (opens in new tab) and Best Buy before the game’s official name was announced (opens in new tab). In either case, you can reserve a copy now for $60 before the official Nintendo artwork and release dates replace the placeholders.

Although Nintendo has not revealed any background information, we may still glean several key details from the Breath of the Wild 2 videos. We may expect the same versions of Link and Zelda from Breath of the Wild, for one thing. Zelda games don’t often stick with the same versions of Link, Zelda, and Ganon from one installment to the next. However, Zelda II and Majora’s Mask did the same thing, so it’s not entirely unprecedented.

Furthermore, we are aware that Link and Zelda will look into the mysterious spirit energy that can bring the dead back to life. A calm shot of Hyrule is accompanied by an unsettling rumble, implying that the once-bright lands of Hyrule may be corrupted and transformed into a dark reflection of themselves by this spirit energy. A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess aren’t the first games in the Zelda series, or even the most recent, to feature Link traveling between contrasting bright and dark worlds.

So, it looks like the plan is for Link and Zelda to go on another adventure after Breath of the Wild, just like they said they would in the ending. As a result of their odd finding, Hyrule is now under attack by an evil force. Zelda will either be an integral part of the plot for most of the game like she was in Wind Waker or she will need to be rescued immediately as she did in the original Breath of the Wild.

If you’re curious about Breath of the Wild’s world but don’t want to wait, you can get some answers in the prequel game Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The game came out in November and is a lengthy, significant game, albeit a hack-and-slash action title and not an open-world adventure. Though it’s not a sequel to Breath of the Wild, it does provide players a second chance to explore the same world.

While Nintendo has been very quiet on the subject of Breath of the Wild 2, we should get some new information before the year is through. The 35th anniversary of Zelda’s debut is still ongoing, so now is a great time for Nintendo to update us on the status of our favorite Hylian fighter.
