Wolf Like Me is neither scary nor amusing
Werewolves in a lighthearted rom-com are an appropriate vehicle for Forsythe to express his empathy for people who enter relationships with a lot of baggage. Emotional ties do not work, such as Gary’s initial revulsion and horror when he learns she has eaten people before; we also don’t believe she is concerned that he will expose her previously sealed secret to the world. Even as Mary keeps crashing into his life, Gary tries to fill the void with anxiety, but it’s not frightening or funny.
In the course of Gary and Mary’s relationship, we see how quickly he changes his mind about his reservations, which affects how much we doubt Gary’s daughter will accept their relationship. Mary’s full-moon ravenous appetite dispels the worry that her desire to be loved will bring about the end of all things. Worse, the pacing of the story is off, which is especially noticeable in a rom-com.
