What is the plot of Three Thousand Years of Longing?
The official narrative synopsis from MGM makes it obvious that this isn’t your typical genie story:
“Professor Alithea Binnie is a rational being. She meets a Djinn in Istanbul who, in exchange for her granting him freedom, grants her three wishes. She had heard too many horror stories about wishes gone awry to believe that he is real at first. Djinn argues his case, and she grants a desire that takes them both by surprise.”
Who is in the Three Thousand Years of Longing cast?
Headlining the cast are Oscar winners Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. Thirty hundred years of yearning. Swinton portrays Alithea Binnie, the scholar, and Elba the djiin.
Swinton and Elba are two of the most renowned actors of their day. Aside from her Oscar-winning performance in Michael Clayton, Swinton is also well-known for her roles in films such as We Need to Talk About Kevin, Snowpiercer, and Suspiria. Elba, on the other hand, shot to fame in the BBC series Luther before going on to star in major box office hits like Fast & Furious Presents:
Hobbs & Shaw and The Suicide Squad and became a frontrunner for the role of the next James Bond. Swinton as the Ancient One and Elba as Heimdall are two more MCU regulars. On the other hand, they’ve never collaborated before Three Thousand Years of Longing.

Who is director George Miller?
George Miller, who is most known for directing Max Mad: Fury Road but has a diversified career that dates back to the ’70s, has an extensive filmography that we will briefly explore here.
Miller’s filmography kicks off with 1979’s Mad Max, starring Mel Gibson. He went on to helm all three of the films that continued the Mad Max franchise: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Mad Max: Fury Road. Next up for him is directing Mad Max: The Wasteland, the sequel to the original Mad Max film, and the Fury Road spinoff, Furiosa (scheduled for a 2024 release).
You may be forgiven for thinking that Miller would be a strange choice to direct a fantastical romance, but he has always been a director who isn’t afraid to branch out. Aside from those mentioned above, he has also directed the fantasy comedy The Witches of Eastwick, the biography Lorenzo’s Oil, and the family-friendly animated features Babe: Pig in the City, Happy Feet, and Happy Feet Two. However, the trailer suggests that Miller isn’t going for the typical “dream romance” formula.
