This is a valley of plenty for fans of the Witcher series! The world built by Andrzej Sapkowski seems to be expanding at an exponential rate, what with the anime prequel and the several spinoffs currently in development.
But Henry Cavill’s flagship show, Game of Thrones, has remained the center of attention, and not just because Geralt is a hottie. Season three has already been confirmed by Netflix, even before the release of season two. This is great news for fans of the show.
With a few years having gone since Netflix’s TUDUM event in September 2021, there are lots of updates to give about season three. Grab your trusty steed and all the gold you can carry, for The Witcher season three is returning to the Continent.
The Witcher Season 3 Potential Release Date: When Will It Air?
Henry Cavill’s on-set accident and COVID-related delays were largely to blame for the two-year gap between the first and second seasons of The Witcher.
Season three of The Walking Dead is expected to premiere by the end of 2022 at the earliest, taking into consideration any additional delays due to the pandemic. possibly as early as 2023. Although this may change, it’s still possible.
Digital Spy spoke with showrunner Lauren S Hissrich in the latter week of November 2021 and learned that the writers’ room is already working on scripts for season 3.
As far as I’m concerned, this season’s writing staff is exceptional. We’ve always had great writers on the show, after all. however, in my opinion, there was something special about this season… People who had seen the first season came in with fresh ideas and challenged me on subjects I hadn’t previously thought about.
Lauren continued, “What is intriguing is that we finalized the screenplays, and only then do we start talking to the actors and directors, and getting into the production restrictions of actually turning these eight episodes into a full-length voyage.”
“It’s crucial to me that the performers, for example, feel enthusiastic about their journeys and understand the journeys of their characters. Those are all conversations that will shortly begin.”

The Witcher Season 3 Cast: Who’s in It?
Our favorite characters (including Henry Cavill, who plays Geralt of Rivia in season three) will be back for season three, as well as the newcomers who have helped make the program what it is.

• Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg
• Joey Batey as Jaskier
• Royce Pierreson as Istredd
• Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold
• Kim Bodnia as Vesemir
In season two, Emhyr, Ciri’s father, returns from the dead, so to speak, in the last episode. If the gloomy season two finale is any indication, Bart Edwards will play a key part as season three’s Big Bad.
Expect to see figures from this war resurface as the partnership between Nilfgaard and the elves becomes tenser, as well as the wizards. Season three will very certainly see the return of Mimi Ndiweni (Fringilla), Media Simson (Francesa), Mahesh Jadu (Vilgefortz), and MaryAnne Buring (Tissaia).
Some familiar celebrities from other popular franchises made their way onto the show’s third-season cast roster.
So far, this includes:
• The Flash’s Robbie Amell as Gallatin, who leads an army of guerrilla Scoia’tael fighting for Nilfgaard.
• Shang-Chi’s Menger Zhang as Milva, a fierce and talented human huntress adopted by the dryads of Brokilon Forest, who also has incredible archery skills and a strong survival instinct.
• Fleabag’s Hugh Skinner as King Vizimir’s (Ed Birch) playboy brother Prince Radovid. The press release states: “With his good looks and drunken charm, Radovid amazes with how incisive he can be in political affairs, but it’s all games until someone gets hurt.”
• Bloods’ Christell Elwin is Mistle, a member of teenage misfit gang The Rats who is suspicious and out for revenge – though a chance meeting changes everything.
Hopefully, the show will finally include some LGBT characters… Cassie Clare, who played Philippa Eilhart in season two, will be back in the role in season three, following her brief appearance in season two.
This is something that is alluded to in the books, but you never get into what is Ciri’s sexuality and we start to go into that more as well,” said Lauren S Hissrich to Digital Spy regarding Ciri’s sexuality.
“It’s exciting to think of what’s to come.” Thanks for mentioning it, because one of the things we strive to achieve with The Witcher is to illustrate that fantasy is for everyone and reflects everyone. ”
“I won’t know until we get there how I’m going to negotiate how Ciri is negotiating her sexuality,” Ciri actress Freya Allan revealed. In the course of the season, you’ll get flashes of her attempting to deal with the reality that she’s becoming more and more boy-like. […] But I don’t believe she’s realized her sexuality as of yet, at least not to my knowledge. It’s something she’ll learn about in season three or four, at the very least. “We’ll have to wait and see.”
A character known as “The Professor,” aka Ralf Blunden, is known to Witcher fans as an assassin in specs who has a large vocabulary but doesn’t always understand it. We believe the filmmakers have put out casting calls for this character.
For sure he’s looking for Yennefer and Ciri. As a side note, he’s not to be mistaken with the first Witcher’s Professor, who was a bit like him but not quite. But let’s be clear: nothing here has been proven.
Iranian Intelligence also says Safiya Ingar has been cast as pivotal Time of Contempt character Milva, but we’re going to take that with a grain of Saltpeter until we see an official announcement.
Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh, who portrays high priestess Nenneke, may be absent from the festivities. A spokesperson for the actress has stated that she’s unsure how much she’ll be featured in subsequent episodes.
When asked by RadioTimes about a potential comeback, Andoh said, “Yeah, I don’t know.” You never know. There are so many books. In the stories, they’ve gone in so many different directions.
There’s a lot of material about Nenneke in the books. What they do with this version, though, is up in the air. To a large extent, we’ll have to wait and see what the show’s creators want to do with the information from the novels.
The Witcher Season 3 Plot: What Will Happen?
To keep his newly reunited family safe from those who would destroy it, Geralt took Ciri of Cintra into hiding, as monarchs, magicians, and animals of the Continent competed for her capture, according to the official program synopsis.
“To learn more about Ciri’s magic, Yennefer takes them to Aretuza, a haven where she expects to learn more about the young woman’s latent abilities. Instead, they find themselves in the middle of a political fight rife with corruption and black magic. They have no choice but to fight back and risk losing each other forever if they don’t.”
Lauren S Hissrich, who should know, says “Money aside: S3 is huge.” She’s also aware of the budget, but she’s choosing to keep it a secret for now, which is understandable.
After the tumultuous conclusion of season two, the upcoming episodes will center on Ciri’s destiny as a world-destroyer or, ideally, a savior if season four is ever revealed. Even though many people want to use Ciri’s power for their ends, including her own (before deceased) father, at least she has Geralt and Yennefer to protect her now.

Season three of The Witcher will be based on The Time of Contempt, the second book in the Witcher narrative, according to Hissrich. A coup in Aretuza separates Yennefer, Ciri, and Geralt from each other in that book’s plot. Though this blueprint can change, as it so frequently does when it is translated from paper to screen, it is worth keeping in mind.
In an interview with Netflix’s Geeked channel following the release of season two, Cavill indicated that following that great betrayal, things will be very different for Geralt and Yennefer:
This is a difficult situation to come back from,” he says. It’s going to take a lot of effort to forgive this one. This season, Geralt’s greatest improvement has been his ability to accept that he can’t achieve this all by himself.”
As Anya Chalotra noted, Yennefer is going to have a lot to learn as well:
This is just how she is: she’s always been Yen, never trusting anyone and always hiding her true self behind a veil of secrecy. “It’s going to be incredibly difficult for her to just dive into a new way of being,” she says.
In November 2021, we asked Joey Batey about the future of Jaskier during The Witcher’s newest promotional tour.
“It’s a difficult one,” he admitted. “I have complete faith in Lauren’s [Hissrich] vision. She’s taking texts from the 1980s and giving them a modern twist by incorporating things that people today desire to see on television. They’ve had enough of dragons. They’d like to see dragons, but they’re also curious about the continent’s xenophobia. Why are there so many conflicts and turbulence?
“She does an amazing job of reimagining political arguments as fantastical tales. In season three, “the continuance of that, and deeper examination of the things that fans care about,” is what I’m most looking forward to.”
Freya Allan provided us a more detailed response when we asked her the same question:
Ciri’s transformation into an “insane fighter” is all I care about. That is the most important consideration. When she gets her hands on a real silver sword, rather than a broomstick, I’ll be over the moon. [laughs]. This is a day I can’t wait for and I’m sure Ciri can’t wait either. As a result, we’ll all be ecstatic.”
It was disclosed by Freya in an interview with Radio Times that she had a sneak peek at the scripts for season three: “It’s a lot of fun.” It’s going to be a fantastic season, in my opinion.”
However, things may not go as planned for everyone. Season three will have “a lot of action, some death… some death,” as showrunner Lauren S Hissrich revealed during an appearance on a panel at the Lucca Comics & Games Festival in Italy. Is she talking about the death of a prominent character or a classic case of monster-slaying? Let’s see what happens…
Hissrich discussed to Polygon how the elves and their growing presence in season three will affect the storyline in an interview.
While [the major novel being adapted], Blood of Elves, does not have as much of an emphasis on the elf tale, viewers will see that we do in season two. However, I’m aware that the Scoia’tael, an elf army fighting for Nilfgaard, will be introduced in season three. They also don’t look good. In some ways, it’s a harsh and depressing plot.
That is why I’m concerned about humanizing and understanding their role in the conflict. What’s the origin of these people? What are they arguing about? It doesn’t matter if they get disoriented along the way. What would you call the setting of this story? As a result, we’re always considering The Witcher as a whole. ”
But don’t hold your breath waiting for this to be finalized. The writers’ room already has a plan in place, but the executive producer, Hissrich, has promised fans that she will take into account the reaction to season two and may make changes in the future.
Lauren revealed this in a tweet she sent out on December 21st, in which she wrote:
“Today is the twenty-first day of December. Since the episode premiered four days ago, I’m curious to hear what people are saying about it (not just critics). That’s an exaggeration, to say the least. She tweeted, “I can’t stay away.”

As for Eskel’s death and Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri’s friendship, she hinted that more information would be revealed in the next season.
The last thing I want is for them to think they’re yelling into nothingness. The debate over why Eskel died or when G/Y/C will bond isn’t something I have time to have — or shouldn’t be taking RIGHT NOW. S3 is a “(Psst).”
Season three producer Steven Gaub has started posting set photos to his Instagram account, although they don’t indicate any major new locations or circumstances:
Each Witcher season has taken a slightly different approach to structure, so expect that to continue with season 3, which will have a tighter timeline.
According to Hissrich, “our seasons are dictated by the stories that we want to convey” (via The Wrap). As a case study, the structure is a wonderful one. Non-linear plots were unnecessary in season two. Because of this, we used a linear strategy that allowed us to experiment with many aspects of visions and flashbacks that we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. Season three, in my opinion, is fantastic.
Based on The Time of Contempt, which I think is an adaptable novel. A lot happens, and a lot of it is just jaw-dropping when you see it. As a result, we’re letting that drive our narrative. It’s a relatively short season, for example, in Season 3. Because it doesn’t need to, there isn’t a lot of time passing.”
Don’t anticipate the show to continue after the books have been published. Andrzej Sapkowski, on the other hand, is a touch more productive with his main series than George R. R. Martin. Fortunately (sorry George).
Andrzej Sapkowski concluded his story in the same place as Hissrich wants to end his. For me, there is no need to continue crafting stories after his planned end. As a side note, he’s released two new books while we’ve been working on the series. We’re attempting to be a little more flexible in our approach.
As long as there is interest in the show, I will continue to compose it,” he remarked. Currently, there appears to be a lot of interest in the topic. We’re growing our universe, and some of that is due to that. That’s why we can continue to convey Sapkowski’s adventures through the anime films, or through the spinoff that just concluded production, without detracting from the main storytelling of the mothership.”
The Witcher Season 3 Episodes: How Many Will There Be?
Season three of The Witcher is yet to be released by Netflix, but if the prior two seasons are any indication, we may expect it to be as long as eight episodes. As the Witcherverse expands, we wouldn’t be surprised to see season three extend to ten episodes, which would mean even more witchy goodies for us to enjoy!
During the first three days of season two’s release, Netflix claimed that fans had logged 142.4 million viewing hours. Only 49.1 million hours of The Witcher season one were seen between December 13 and 19 within that period, the closest competition to The Witcher. Accordingly, extending the season by two or three episodes wouldn’t waste Netflix’s money.
The Witcher Season 3 Trailer: When Can I Watch It?
Considering that the third season’s writing began in the summer of 2021 and filming began in April of 2022, we’ll likely have to wait a bit for the trailer to arrive.
