Outlander Season 7: Season seven of Outlander is on the road, but unlike our dear Claire, we can’t merely time travel to find out what happens next.
The sixth season of Outlander premiered on Starz/Starzplay in March 2022, carrying on the story of the Fraser family as they strive to settle down in 18th-century North Carolina.
Life is never quiet for them, and the fact that the Revolutionary War is on the horizon doesn’t help matters.
By the end of season six, with Jamie, Young Ian, Bree, Roger, Fergus, and Marsali dispersed across the country, Claire was in grave danger.
Outlander Season 7 Potential Release Date: When Is It Out?
A vast 21-month droughtlander separated seasons five and six (thanks for nothing, epidemic), but season seven shouldn’t keep viewers waiting quite as long.
Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin were all photographed on Scotland set at the start of filming in April 2022. The photo was shared on the show’s official social media channels.
Outlander producer Maril Davis announced in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy that filming for Season 7 had begun in May of 2022. Davis said they were on a “pretty typical pace” and promised a “supersized season,” but she wouldn’t give any specific release dates.
We already knew that season seven of Outlander would have twice as many episodes as season six.
Balfe announced in an interview with Digital Spy for Season 6 that Season 7 will take 13 months to film, putting the premiere at least as far off as May 2023.
That’s about when we’d start seeing episodes. Therefore, the earliest we can hope for is the latter part of 2023.

Outlander Season 7 Cast: Who Will Be In It?
The events of Diana Gabaldon’s sixth and seventh Outlander novels, “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” and “An Echo in the Bone,” will be the subject of season seven.
All the major players are present in those books; thus, the following cast members will undoubtedly return:
• Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser)
• Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser)
• Richard Rankin (Roger Mackenzie)
• Sophie Skelton (Brianna Mackenzie)
We’d also expect to see fan-favorites return, including:
• John Bell (Young Ian)
• Lauren Lyle (Marsali)
• Cesar Domboy (Fergus)
• Caitlin O’Ryan (Lizzie)
• David Berry (Lord John)

Additionally, some of the newer cast members may return to complete their character narratives in the new season, as the end of season six left several loose ends that need to be addressed.
• Alexander Vlahos (Allan Christie)
• Mark Lewis Jones (Tom Christie)
• Brennan Martin (Wendigo Donner)
• Chris Larkin (Richard Brown)
• Paul Gorman (Josiah and Keziah Beardsley)
We now know that a recast version of a character from season three will return for the future season.
The role of Jenny Murray, previously portrayed by Laura Donnelly, will be taken over by Kristin Atherton (Waterloo Road, Doctors), it has been confirmed.
Donnelly’s absence is being blamed on a scheduling difficulty. She has a role in The Nevers, played a significant role in Marvel’s Werewolf By Night Halloween special, and could have other parts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The return of Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek), Brian Fraser (Andrew Whipp), Dougal MacKenzie (Graham McTavish), Ian Murray (Steven Cree), Joan MacKimmie (Layla Burns), and Laoghaire Fraser has also been announced for Season 5. (Nell Hudson).
Outlander Season 7 Plot: What Will Happen?
The seventh season must also explain what time traveler Wendigo Donner’s return means for the Fraser family, as well as uncover who killed Malva.
The Frasers face even greater peril in the future. With Claire’s arrival in Wilmington signaling a turning point in the nation’s discontent, season six’s finale left viewers with a taste of what’s to come in season seven: the Revolutionary War (the American War of Independence).
Diana Gabaldon’s sixth novel, An Echo in the Bone, occurs between 1776 and 1778. The Declaration of Independence was written on July 4, 1776, and the Revolutionary War lasted until 1783.
Readers of the books know that the Frasers are dragged into the conflict and that Jamie ends up on the opposite side from his ally Lord John and Lord John’s “son” (really Jamie’s biological son), William.
Also, a new family member is on the way; in season six, Brianna revealed that she was expecting her second child, which could force her and Roger to make tough choices about where (and when) they want to raise their growing family.
Outlander Season 7 Episodes: How Many Will There Be?
Season six of Outlander, originally scheduled to air for 12 episodes, was shortened to eight due to pandemic filming concerns.
Yes, I’m afraid that is terrible news. The good news is that those four episodes will be included in season seven, containing a record-breaking 16(!) attacks.
According to Caitriona Balfe, exclusively for Digital Spy, “what we did was we took the four episodes that we would have filmed [for season six], and we now have them at the beginning of season seven, so season seven is going to be a 16 episode season.”
That’s why I believe we can continue to produce Outlander as we did in the past: by taking our time and letting the story develop organically.
Outlander Season 7 Trailer: When Can I See It?
There has been no new content from season seven so far. When Starz (in the US) or Starzplay (in the UK) wants to announce a broadcast date for the following season, a trailer is released.
Given that this isn’t expected to happen until early in the next year, at the earliest, a trailer probably won’t be released until late 2022 at the earliest.
Need it now, not in a month? At least a small portion of your favorite shows will continue to air. It’s All Coming Back to Me, starring Sam Heughan, will hit theatres in February 2023 (in time for Valentine’s Day!). In addition, he and Graham McTavish are working on a new season of Men in Kilts, which is set in New Zealand.
