On Tuesday night, Channel 4’s Derry Girls came to a heartbreaking end (17th May).
The good news is that Derry Girls will screen a special extra episode just one day after the show’s final episode airs.
All of the loose ends from the last moments of episode 6 will be neatly tied up in the special extended conclusion, which will show at 9 pm on Channel 4 on Wednesday (18th May).
As the show’s five primary characters await their GCSE results and take their first steps toward adulthood, this is the penultimate outing of the series (you can read our five-star Derry Girls season 3 review here).
Season 3 has been full of surprises, from a long-awaited kiss to a Mary and Aunt Sarah flashback about the girls’ parents to several run-ins with the cops.
Derry Girls’ creator, Lisa McGee, has hinted that she’s still “plotting” future installments, including a possible Derry Girls movie based on her youth.

Derry Girls Season 3 Release Date
The third season of Derry Girls premiered on Tuesday, April 12th, 2022, at 9:15 p.m. on Channel 4.
Channel 4 confirmed the season’s premiere date at the end of March 2022.
It aired on Channel 4 on Tuesday 17th May 2022 with a special episode on Wednesday 18th May.
Derry Girls was renewed by Channel 4 for a third season in April 2020, and production is scheduled to begin in June of that year.
However, according to series actor Nicola Coughlan, filming was halted due to the coronavirus epidemic (who plays Clare).
The Bridgerton actress revealed to the Belfast Telegraph in January 2021 that the cast was still waiting for filming to resume because of the requirement to shoot in Derry at the time.
“We’re still waiting since it’s essential to the project that we film in Derry,” she said. When it comes to the logistics, things are a lot more difficult than they used to be.”
At the end of June 2020, she told Angela Scanlon’s Thanks A Million podcast (via Metro): “We were intended to start filming around now.”. “In the beginning, your brain makes assumptions like, “It’ll just be a month, everything will go back to normal,” to make you feel better.
It’s a bummer that filming has been put on hold, but “we’re all thrilled to go back and start again and see the scripts because we haven’t,” she said.
When it comes to the third and last season of Derry Girls, Nicola Coughlan stated in late October 2021 that she would be “in Belfast filming on Monday morning.”
On December 21st, 2021, filming finished on the series.

Dara O Briain, another Irish comedic legend, had previously been mentioned by writer McGee as a possible cast member for season 3.
Nicola Coughlan’s involvement was reduced in the last episodes because of her commitment to filming Bridgerton during the epidemic.
“Derry Girls’ script required several sacrifices. I was devastated because I had so really hoped to take part in this “According to Coughlan, speaking to Belfast Live.
“However, we had to make certain concessions. You know, they had to reduce my role a bit, which was a challenge for me. It’s quite difficult. But, you know, I think the show’s fans will be pleased.”
Derry Girls Plot
There are four teenage ladies from Derry and one little English guy in 1990s Northern Ireland amid The Troubles in this coming-of-age sitcom.
Based on Lisa McGee’s experiences as a 16-year-old adolescent, the show follows Erin’s eccentric family and friends as they live in a world of armed police, British Army check stations, and “peace barriers.”
Erin’s parents and the imposing Sister Michael are frequently alarmed by the antics of the gang.
English boy James and Clare’s coming-out storylines were two of the most memorable aspects of the first season. Our recap of Derry Girls season 1, episode 6 will help you relive the action-packed and dramatic series finale.
In the second season, Erin and James begin to develop feelings for one other, with the latter nearly leaving Derry for good. Clinton’s rousing address from his 1995 visit to the city closed the series on a positive note.
Derry Girls Season 3 Plot Rumours
Writer Lisa McGee chatted with Nicola Coughlan about the impending plots, the Belfast Telegraph reported.
This isn’t a surprise to me because they’re so bright.” The fact that she inspired me to do it now is as impressive as her talent. Then then, we want to put on the best spectacle possible.
There is no doubt in my mind that if they told us we could leave tomorrow, we would all be there.
Additionally, McGee revealed to RadioTimes.com that the new episodes will be set in a more hopeful time for the gang, as their neighborhood moves toward peace and the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. (where the writer suggested she would like to wrap things up).
“I’m simply thinking about storylines at the moment,” she remarked in April 2019. I’d like to write about my political past. It’s a little nerve-wracking, but I’m going to have to start taking notes shortly.
For one thing, all of these breakaway groups appeared out of nowhere, which was weird, and then people were just getting acclimated to the peace period, so obviously things were extremely different for us then.
I think they had more to lose, and we didn’t want it to go wrong since it was something we all truly wanted. I think it’s scarier because it’s something everyone was terrified to dream about, and now we’re seeing it happen.
“How the others try to bring them back and deal with that,” McGee said of the potential departure of a member of the Derry Girls crew for “a rival gang” in series three.
McGee hinted that the little English fella James could be the group’s betrayer, which would be intriguing given James’ blossoming connection with Erin.

Derry Girls’ first and second seasons can be seen on All 4’s streaming service, which is provided by Channel 4.
A few days after Netflix’s announcement on 14th July 2020, Season 2’s launch on the streaming service was delayed.
Netflix has yet to add the second season, so it’s not clear when the third and final one will be available.
Will Season 3 Be the Last of Derry Girls?
Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee confirmed the show’s cancellation after three seasons in September 2021.
“The intention was always to say goodbye after three series,” McGee stated. For now, this is it for us. We’re delighted to begin filming this series with our fantastic cast and crew to hopefully take our dedicated fans on one last trip. Who knows whether Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle, or James will return in some other guise someday.
Gerry, Erin’s father, is played by Tommy Tiernan, who revealed in March 2020 that he believed the show’s third season will be it’s final.
“As far as I know, this is the final series,” he remarked on Jason Manford’s Absolute Radio show, according to Metro.
She tweeted to let followers know that she was deep into writing Series 3 and didn’t know what the future held, but “please don’t worry.”.
The producer of the Channel 4 series Derry Girls has also disclosed that she’s been thinking about making a spin-off movie.
On Ray D’Arcy’s RTÉ Radio 1 broadcast on July 20th, 2020 (via the Belfast Telegraph), she revealed that she’s thinking about doing a Derry Girls movie.
Initially, she wasn’t sure if it would work, but now an idea is forming in her thoughts, so she plans to give it some more thought after the third season. In the long run, “I’d like to do it, and I think the cast does, too.”
“We should have been shooting it now, but we had to push back,” McGee said of the third season of the series. Till it’s safe, “We’re putting it off until it’s time.”
