Barbarian: The Plot
Tess is attempting to check in to the rental property she has in Detroit via remote check-in while she is in the city for job interviews. She opens the key box, but there’s no key inside. It’s late, it’s raining, and the key is missing. She knocks angrily on the rental’s door, only to discover that another tenant is already there. Even though Keith has been sleeping there for a month on the owner’s dime, he nevertheless welcomes her inside so that they can determine why the owners made two reservations for the same period.
And so begins Tess’s recurring nightmare. There are several odd occurrences that occur in the house, like the discovery of a hidden entrance in the basement, that make it seem as though the inhabitants of the house don’t want anyone else to go. In the preview, we see her unlock the door and hear Keith’s distress call. Things go downhill when she enters the hidden passage to find him. Since she was meant to have the rental all to herself, her surprise upon discovering that Keith isn’t the only occupant of the house is compounded by the fact that she encounters other people there as well.
There is no surprise that the hidden basement of the property is damp and dark. Of course, there are also bedrooms furnished with mattresses and dated video recorders. There are VHS tapes and a bizarre narrator who says the “process may be overwhelming” while snippets of film play on the TV screen. Which method? When Tess walks through the door, what will happen to her? The narrator continues, noting that the situation is “absolutely natural” and that the experience will improve with “practice.” What exactly is going on beneath this seemingly normal suburban house?
