Koyoharu Gotouge is the author and illustrator of the manga and anime series Demon Slayer. A young child, having lost his family to a demon, spends the programme hunting down and killing every demon he can find.
Those who haven’t read the manga in its entirety may be left wondering if Demon Slayer’s main character, Tanjiro, actually meets his end.
What Happens To Tanjiro Towards The End of Demon Slayer?
Even though it seems that a yes or no answer would suffice here, the truth is a little more nuanced. Two distinct storylines make up the Final Battle arc in Demon Slayer: the Infinity Castle narrative and the Sunrise Countdown arc.
At this point in the story, Tanjiro and the Hashiras are aiming to kill Muzan for good by distracting him from his plans until morning. Kibutsuji Muzan, the main adversary of Demon Slayer, dies near the end of the battle. In his final moments, he reaches out to Tanjiro, giving him all of his blood. Before the blood was injected into Tanjiro, he stopped breathing and was technically dead for a few seconds. Tanjiro is resurrected and ultimately evolves into a more potent Demon than Muzan.
Fans love Nezuko because she intervenes to prevent her older brother from harming others in the popular manga and anime series Demon Slayer. They saw the Demon King materialize in the form of a child who had been one of their allies just seconds before, and fear spread across the Hashiras’ faces.

In large part because of Shinobu’s medicine, he was prevented from destroying the entire town. Hashira, the bug healer who had helped Nezuko, offered Kanao some of the same medicine she had given to her friend.
Kanao summoned all her might and attempted to avoid Demon Tanjiro’s strikes by using her Breath of the Flower Final Form: Equinoctial Vermilion Eye. She uses a syringe to jab him full of a medication made from wisteria flowers. Tanjiro, thankfully, is transformed back into a human within minutes.
Three generations after the battle with Muzan, Tanjiro is mentioned to have died in chapter 205 of Demon Slayer.
Summarizing, Tanjiro was mortally wounded while fighting Muzan but was brought back to life almost instantly after receiving some of the Demon King’s blood. After transforming into a demon, Kanao injects him with a special medicine derived from wisteria flowers, restoring him to human form.
Muzan Kibutsuji’s Abilities:
The death of Tanjiro can be directly attributed to Muzan. I will talk about who Muzan is and how insanely strong he actually was to provide light on why Tanjiro died despite winning the final battle.
Demons can trace their ancestry back to Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King. Since he was the first demon, he has amassed all the power of the other demons and used it to murder countless humans over the course of his almost ten thousand years on Earth. Along with his many other talents, he can use his blood to conjure demons and fashion a whip out of black barbed wires to ensnare his foes.
Furthermore, Muzan’s strength is legendary; it exceeds that of every other demon put together. Even after Tamayo drugged him with Anti-Kibutsuji during the Infinity Castle Arc, he was still capable of obliterating buildings with ease and unleashing devastating strikes that carved out enormous craters. In a battle against him, not even the Hashira Gyomei, who possessed the most raw strength, fared well.
Because of his limitless stamina and Godlike speed and reflexes, he is unstoppable in combat. It took the combined efforts of the entire Hashira to bring him down, and even then, he was responsible for the deaths of the vast majority of them. Also, he can’t be killed by severing his head off like most demons do.
In Which Episode Does Tanjiro Die?
The Demon Slayer anime is currently unfinished. Second season development is ongoing, and a premiere date has yet to be determined. Back in 2020, the anime adaptation of the series Mugen Train ended airing its critically acclaimed feature film. Whether or not the Final Battle Arc will air as a movie like it did for Mugen Train is still up in the air, and season 2 may be the final instalment of the anime series.
As the manga has concluded, however, I will focus on the chapters that feature the actual death. Towards the end of Chapter 200, following the conflict with Muzan, Tanjiro was killed. However, the manner in which he passed away due to old age was never made clear.
What ended up happening was a time jump at the end of Chapter 204, which revealed Japan in the present day. Chapter 205 then depicts younger Kamado family members attending a contemporary school, with one of them bearing a striking likeness to Tanjiro.
This suggests Tanjiro was successful in starting and maintaining a family, and he likely had a long and happy life before passing away. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the release of the anime adaptation.
Tanjiro Death Scene
There hasn’t been an animated version of this touching moment in Tanjiro’s story yet. While Chapter 200 isn’t often discussed online, a video showcasing pages from the chapter is available if you dig deep enough.
A fan-made animated scene portraying Tanjiro’s tragic end is a distinct possibility. But it’s unclear if we’ll get to see the actual animated scene in Season 2 or if the directors are saving it for a later season or feature.
