Kamala Harris has made history as the first Black and Asian-American woman to serve as vice president. Her spouse, Douglas Emhoff, has also made history by becoming the first Second Gentleman in the country, and he obviously takes the position seriously.
In November, Emhoff spoke up to Time and talked openly about his unique position. “Regarding the “genderized” aspects of the job, such as selecting wallpaper and china designs, he asserts, “I’m doing things that I probably wouldn’t have done because one: it’s part of the job. Second, it benefits her.” He said that Karen Pence, the spouse of his predecessor in the VP position, had been “extremely gracious in giving advise.”

Harris and Emhoff, who did not believe in lengthy engagements, had their wedding in the Santa Barbara Courthouse four months after becoming engaged, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
The pair exchanged vows they had written themselves while a cellist played in the background and Harris donned a light gold dress. A floral garland was draped around Emhoff’s neck, a customary element of Indian weddings, and a glass was broken after the ceremony to recognize Emhoff’s Jewish roots. Harris’s sister Maya presided over the wedding.

He Was An Entertainment Lawyer
Even though Emhoff was reared in New Jersey and was born in Brooklyn, California may have had the most influence on his life. He received his law degree from the Gould School of Law at the University of Southern California, met and wed his wife there, and was initially based there as a partner at the DLA Piper law firm.
He was dividing his time between California and Washington, D.C., before the announcement of Harris as Biden’s choice for vice president. Still, after Harris was named the vice president-elect, a campaign aide confirmed to The Washington Post that he would be leaving the company to concentrate on his role as the vice president’s spouse.
Emhoff was listed as representing “major domestic and international corporations and some of today’s highest profile personalities and influencers in complicated business, real estate, and intellectual property litigation issues” in his DLA Piper profile.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, in one such case, Emhoff defended the advertising firm TBWA in a legal battle for the ownership of the chihuahua that appeared in Taco Bell’s “Yo Quiero Taco Bell” commercials in the early 2000s.
He is no longer employed at the law firm, where he reportedly made a sizeable amount of his and Harris’s $1.6 million salary in 2020. Still, he will continue to teach one class at Georgetown University each semester. Emhoff stated, “I’ve long wanted to teach and help the next generation of young lawyers. “I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the Georgetown community.”
He Has Two Kids From A Previous Marriage
Emhoff wed his first wife, Kerstin, in 1992; she later helped start the production business Prettybird. She even volunteered to help with Harris’s presidential campaign even though they divorced 16 years later but remain friends.
Cole and Ella are the couple’s two children. Emhoff and Kerstin (named for John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald.) Ella attends the Parsons School of Design for the Fine Arts, whereas Cole is a Colorado College alumnus.
Emhoff and Harris (whom they refer to as “Mamala”) make time for their “almost a bit too functioning” blended family, even though the kids have mainly avoided the political spotlight. In a Glamour interview, Ella revealed that despite Harris’ busy campaign schedule, he still left voicemail messages to let her know he was thinking about her. It will simply say, “Hello, I was just thinking about you, I hope your day is going well,” she said.
Ella, in particular, stole the show with a magnificently adorned coat at the inauguration event in January, where both kids were present.
He And Harris Met On A Blind Date
While Harris was acting as California’s attorney general, PR consultant Chrisette Hudlin set up Emhoff and his second wife a few years after their divorce. Hudlin told Marie Claire, “I started looking at him as more of a lawyer, but by the end of the meeting, I was just like him as a person. Emhoff described briefly meeting Harris at an occasion, and his admiration enchanted Hudlin for her friend to arrange their rendezvous.
The morning after our first date, @DouglasEmhoff emailed me a list of his available dates for the next couple of months: ‘I want to see if we can make this work.’ And we did.
