Since the original, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been one of the most anticipated games for the Nintendo Switch. A Nintendo Direct at E3 2021 gave us our first look at gameplay, as well as a few solid tidbits about the upcoming game. For the first time, Link will be able to visit temples in the sky as part of the sequel to one of the best video games of the last decade.

Breath of the Wild 2 Story

Aside from the Breath of the Wild 2 trailers, we know a few essential details about the game. First and foremost, this is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, with the same versions of Link and Zelda returning. It’s unusual for a Zelda game to not completely redesign Link, Zelda, and Ganon every time. Zelda II and Majora’s Mask also used this tactic, so it’s not completely unheard of.

Another thing that Link and Zelda will do is examine this unusual spirit energy that can reanimate dead people. There is an eerie sound in the background of this picture of Hyrule, which hints that this spirit energy may corrupt and transform the land into a dark reflection of itself. The Zelda series, from A Link to the Past to Twilight Princess, is no stranger to traveling between light and dark worlds.

As promised in the epilogue, Link and Zelda will go on a new adventure following Breath of the Wild. They uncover something weird, and now the evil power they’ve discovered threatens Hyrule as a whole. Just like in Wind Waker, Zelda will either be a major player or she will need to be saved right away, like in the first Breath of the Wild.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a prequel to Breath of the Wild, helps fill in any gaps you may have concerning the world. Despite being a hack-and-slash action game rather than an open-world adventure, the game was released in November and has a considerable runtime. This isn’t a sequel to Breath of the Wild, but it is a new opportunity to experience the same world.

As much as Nintendo has been tight-lipped regarding Breath of the Wild 2 in general, expect some information before the year is over. The 35th anniversary of Zelda’s release is a great opportunity for Nintendo to bring us up to date on our favorite Hylian hero.
