Black Adam Rock Bottoms at the Box Office: Dwayne Johnson worked hard to raise buzz surrounding his DC Universe debut, Black Adam, but it looks like nobody was truly ready for the structure of power to change. While the nearly $400 million in worldwide box office that Black Adam has already earned is impressive, the film still needs to earn roughly $600 million in order to turn a profit.
Warner Bros. officials have told Variety that the studio needs only $400-450 million in cinemas to break even, but given the film’s meteoric rise in popularity as a streamable experience, it seems unlikely that number will be reached. People who were on the fence about seeing the film in cinemas likely waited until it was available on streaming services after it had been out for only 33 days (compared to 75 days before the epidemic).
While it’s true that many high-budget films bomb at the box office, Johnson’s involvement in so much hype leading up to the film’s release does not help matters. The film opened to negative reviews and a general lack of interest in discussing it. Since Black Adam wasn’t particularly well-known outside of dedicated comic book readers, the film relied heavily on Johnson’s popularity to attract an audience.

The success of tentpole superhero movies depends heavily on the popularity of the characters themselves, rather than the actors who portray them. The fact that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever made $331 million in three days — almost as much as Black Adam did in four weeks at global theatres — is the best evidence of this. Even if Johnson’s efforts to get a Black Adam sequel are unsuccessful, at least we know that Superman will return.

Initially, Johnson was set to play Black Adam in Shazam!, and he was even confirmed for the role in September 2014, but the film’s producers ultimately chose to spin out Black Adam into a spinoff. When Sztykiel was hired, it was October of 2017. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the original release date of December 2021 for Collet-Serra, who started work in June 2019, has been pushed back to 2022.
the course of the following year, more actors, including four members of the Justice Society of America, were cast, and Haines and Noshirvani rewrote the script. The shoot lasted from April through August of 2021 at Atlanta’s Trilith Studios and in Los Angeles.
The film Black Adam debuted on the international stage in Mexico City on October 3, 2022, and it was released in theatres across the United States on October 21, 2022. The picture was a financial failure at the box office, earning $384.7 million worldwide on a budget of $195-200 million. The makers are working on a sequel right now.
