Studio Ufotable’s dedication to high standards of animation has made the name “Demon Slayer” familiar to audiences all over Japan and the rest of the world. However, that can’t be the main reason for the show’s incredible success among anime fans. So then, what is it? The answer is that Demon Slayer features characters with absurdly high levels of strength.
The series features a vast ensemble cast of super-powered individuals who each contribute to the show’s compelling world in their own unique way. While the manga version of the story wraps up rather quickly, there is no shortage of jaw-dropping scenes in which the Demon Slayers engage in a massive battle. Over time, this raises each character’s latent strength, resulting in an impressive ensemble.
1. Yoriichi Tsugikuni
There has never been a more powerful Demon Slayer than Yoriichi Tsugikuni, hence he is the only one worthy of inclusion on this list. Everything we know about breathing today has its roots in Yoriichi’s original Sun Breathing Style, which he developed himself. He is a superb swordsman who is able to execute each of his thirteen forms with pinpoint precision.
However, Yoriichi was born with the Demon Slayer mark already on his body, whereas other fighters must fulfil certain requirements before they receive the designation. No one has to tell you about the incredible feats and unrivalled might of Muzan Kibutsuji, the ancestor of all demons. The Demon King possesses a huge arsenal of interconnected skills that can be used to defeat even the most powerful Hashiras. Because of his biokinesis, immortality, and ability to stay forever young, he is effectively indestructible.
Muzan has the molecular precision to control and manipulate demon physiology. It would be the height of foolishness to challenge him in a one-on-one confrontation, as he seems to be immune to practically everything. In the Sunrise Countdown arc, Muzan reveals his ultimate form, which is so powerful that not even the combined might of the Demon Slayer Corps and Hashiras can stop it.
3. Kokushibo
Upper Rank 1 Kokushibo is the second most powerful opponent to the Hashiras, behind the Demon King Muzan. Among the demons of Muzan, he is at the top of the food chain, and his Crescent Moon Blades are nearly difficult to avoid. Kokushibo has honed his fighting skills and battle savvy over hundreds of years, giving him an advantage that is incomprehensible to most humans.
Even the Hashira are afraid of Kokushibo because just four potential fighters—Gyomei, Sanemi, Muichiro, and Genya—were willing to take on Kokushibo. But they still couldn’t stand their position in the face of him. His insane power and endurance make him one of the strongest characters in Demon Slayer, and he is the only demon to use the Breathing Technique.
4. Gyomei Himejima
There are claims that Gyomei Himejima is the most powerful Hashira in the history of the Demon Slayer series. After only two months in the service, he had already risen to the position of Stone Hashira. Gyomei has been blind his entire life, but he has risen to become the most formidable warrior, earning the utmost respect and establishing himself as the model of a leader.
Gyomei doesn’t use the standard Nichirin Blades, but rather a hand-ax with a spiked flail attached to the hilt by a lengthy chain; this weapon is devastatingly powerful. Then, he uses Stone Breathing in conjunction with his monstrous power to completely overwhelm his foes. Kokushibu acknowledged that he has not seen a warrior of Gyomei’s caliber in the last three hundred years, and he expressed admiration for Gyomei’s innate physical ability.
5. Douma
Douma initially appeared at the end of Season 2 of Demon Slayer, and it took only a glimpse to realise that he had a strong preference for female demon slayers. By virtue of his status as an Upper-Rank Two, he is, without a shadow of a doubt, the third most powerful demon behind Kokushibo and Muzan. A single rank separates him from Akaza, yet his power is orders of magnitude larger, making his martial arts prowess far superior to Akaza’s unarmed fighting style.
Cryokinesis, Douma’s Blood Demon Art, grants him access to an arsenal of devastating ice-based attacks and defences. In addition, the ice he creates with his Blood Demon Art is exceedingly dangerous to those who breathe it in, killing the lungs’ cells and rendering them unable to breathe rapidly. Douma can use this technique for extended periods of time without tiring.
6. Akaza
I don’t think it’s a cliché to say that Akaza is the best-written character in the entire series. In Demon Slayer, Akaza is most famous for his one-on-one victory over the Flame Hashira, Rengoku. Because of his status as an Upper Rank 3, Akaza possesses superhuman strength and a wide range of extraordinary talents, the most notable of which is his martial arts expertise, which can rival or even surpass that of the most accomplished swordsman.
It turns out that Akaza had a keen eye for battle even before he turned demonic. His Blood Demon Art, Destructive Death, was a fusion of Soryu-style martial arts with techniques that generate shockwaves. Being able to heal himself and anticipate his opponent’s assaults while also knowing how to exploit their weaknesses make him one of the game’s most powerful characters.
7. Sanemi Shinazugawa
Even if Sanemi isn’t your favourite character in the anime, his portrayal in the manga is compelling, and he has tremendous strength. He’s like a living tornado, with more strength and stamina than anyone else in the series. The speed and dexterity with which Sanemi can move is quite astounding.
During the fight with Upper Rank 1 in the Infinity Castle storyline, Kokushibo remarked that Sanemi is the strongest Wind Hashira he has ever faced because of his adaptability in battle. Sanemi is the second strongest Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps, but he is also the most aggressive, fiery, and stubborn person you’ll ever meet.
8. Muichiro Tokito
At the tender age of 14, Muichiro Tokito became the youngest-ever Hashira in the Demon Slayer Corps. He has already achieved Hashira status after only two months of training, something only Gyomei Himejima, the strongest Hashira of this generation, has done.
Despite his lack of experience, he has more promise than everyone else, even Tanjiro and Zenitsu. Mist Breathing or a similar technique fuels his superhuman strength, speed, and stamina. Muichiro is one of the most powerful characters in Demon Slayer because he is the only Hashira to ever beat an Upper-Rank Twelve Kizuki on his own.
9. Obanai Iguro
One of the few anime characters with heterochromia, Obanai Iguro (The Serpent Hashira) stands out from the crowd thanks to this distinguishing trait. Obanai is a strong and competent fighter, and not just because of his unusual ability to see in two colours. Along with his superhuman reflexes and speed, he also has a keen brain and works well with his pet snake, Kaburamaru.
Because he developed it on his own, he can claim to be the first person in history to use what is now often referred to as “Serpent Breathing.” Obanai, who was nearly blind in his left eye but had exceptional sword abilities still, rose to the highest rank of Hashira with the aid of Kaburamaru alone. The storyline at Infinity Castle where he faces off against Muzan Kibutsuji is where his real potential shines.
10. Giyu Tomioka
Ginyu’s quiet demeanor and stern but emotionless emotions have earned him the nickname “Depression King” among fans of Japanese animation. Even though none of the Hashiras enjoy his company, Giyu maintains true to his solitary nature despite the fact that he is neither a horrible guy nor rude to anyone. His emotional upbringing likely contributed to some of his social ineptitude.
Putting his personality aside, though, Giyu is a highly adept and skilled swordsman, and his Hashira status is proof of his ability with the blade. The twelfth form, “Dead Calm,” is one of the most powerful attacks in the series, and he can use it since he is a Water Hashira. Upper-Rank Three Akaza remarked on his remarkable techniques and called him one of the best Water Hashira he had ever faced.
