10 Black Female Anime Characters You Must Know

Astoundingly, several anime feature black female protagonists. Anime does not always get it right when it comes to depicting people of different races and ethnicities. In particular, when it comes to Black characters. I am always thrilled if a Black character in anime isn’t a racist stereotype, especially if the character is a Black woman. That’s not really asking for much.

In a positive turn of events, the percentage of Black characters in anime has increased significantly since I was a kid. As a fan, I’m glad to see more representation of Black women in anime. In spite of the rarity of Black female anime characters, I always get excited whenever I come across one in a show I like.

1. Miyuki Ayukawa – Basquash

The combination of Miyuki’s brain and beauty is unbeatable. Because of her enormous contributions to the program’s mech advancements, she is a major player in the show (giant robots). I appreciate how the artists portrayed her grief, and as a Black engineer, she has the potential to encourage more girls to enter STEM fields by serving as a role model for female engineers. She is arguably the most well-known and loved Black female anime character.

2. Mila – Rose Bleach

Mila Rose is a secondary character in the later volumes of Bleach. At the time of the Espada story! Mila is a strong adversary that can challenge even lieutenant-level soul reapers. Despite her design being inspired by Bleach, she has a darker side (wink wink). They could hear it quite clear.

3. Urd – Oh My Goddess

She is the protagonist’s older sister, Bell-dandy. A good sister would never leave her sister hanging like that. Urd is fascinating because he is smart, funny, and insightful. Her caustic, occasionally antagonistic behavior has unmistakable beneficial outcomes. She is arguably the most well-known and loved Black female anime character.

4. S.A.M. – Cannon Busters

Cannon Busters is a new hit anime series on Netflix, and one of the series’ main characters is a man named S.A.M. She has a secret strength that is more than just a hook, even though she seems as sweet as honey and wants to make friends with everyone.

5. Hilda –  Eureka Seven

Eureka Seven features Hilda, a recurring character who plays a supporting role. Subtle theological allusions in a mecha series. She can be a little too forceful at times and has a low tolerance for Crap. She is arguably the most well-known and loved Black female anime character.

6. Carole – Carole & Tuesday

Carole has persevered despite the difficulties she has faced. As the series’ namesake and a member of the band, she is an integral element of the musical duo Carole & Tuesday. Besides her fashionable appearance, hard work ethic, and musical talents, what I admire most about Carole is her determination to realise her dreams.

7. Sister Krone – The Promised Neverland

Sister Krone is a secondary character that shows up about halfway through the show. As a secondary figure, she is introduced as “the opponent.”

She’s powerful, quick, and able to outpace the kids, and she seems to thrive under pressure.

8. Casca – Berserk

At the beginning of Berserk, she is one of the Band of the Falcon’s most powerful and talented commanders. Although I haven’t always approved of the decisions she’s made for her character throughout the years, she still holds a special place in my heart. She is arguably the most well-known and loved Black female anime character.

9. Canary – HunterXHunter

Canary is a bright and savvy teenager who acts as a brutal bodyguard for the powerful and feared Zoldyck family. Despite her formidable fighting skills, she is a caring and compassionate person at heart.

10. Yoruichi Shihoin (Bleach)

There is no way I could make a list of Black women in anime and leave out Yoruichi from Bleach. She was raised in luxury by an aristocratic family and given the title of the princess at birth, but she doesn’t act like one. She’s a tough cookie with wit and intelligence who can hold her own in a fight. I respect how she can seem cool, then switch to a deadly fighter in an instant.
